Sherwood Spirit
November 2018
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk
Autumn has arrived! The trees are losing their leaves, the cold weather is upon us, and the holiday season is around the corner.
In November, we shift our Seven Habits of Happy Kids focus to Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind. This is the habit that reminds students to:
- Plan ahead and set goals
- Be prepared at all times
- Think about the choices they make and how those choices affect their future
- Think about the consequences, positive or negative, of their actions
Please take a moment to talk to your children about the importance of this habit. In school, we will talk to students and guide them through the process of creating personal mission statements, and teaching them about the value of planning ahead.
On November 2, we will welcome author Sarah Albee to Sherwood. Ms. Albee is the author of such books as Dog Days of History, Poison: Deadly Deeds, Why'd They Wear That, and Bugged:How Insects Changed History, among others. She will be talking to the students about how she gathers information for her books and give students some insight into her writing process. We are looking forward to hosting this event. Thanks to our amazing PTA for helping us bring Ms. Albee to Sherwood.
Among the other presentations we are hosting this month are the PSE&G Conservation Caper for our 2nd and 3rd graders and Skull Science for our 3rd graders. Both of these are high-interest and teach the students about important topics!
Our 5th graders will be participating in their annual Sports Night on November 8. During this event, the 5th grade homebase classes will compete against each other in various events. Who will win the Sports Night Cup this year?
This month, we will also host our Annual Night of Giving on November 14. Each grade will be collecting food for families in our community. Please see the informational flyer below. On the evening of November 14, we will open up the school for students to come and assemble food baskets that will be given to the families. This is a great opportunity for students to volunteer some time to help others. This is a clear Win-Win!
On November 16, we will host our fall Family Fun Night. We will host a "Minute To Win It" night. Come out and compete in 60 second games for prizes. We hope to see you there.
Lastly, some reminders. Superintendent's Conference Day will take place on November 6; school make-up photos will be on November 8; schools will be closed on November 12 in observance of Veteran's Day, and Thanksgiving Recess will be November 21 through November 23. Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 30 and December 7. Students will be dismissed at 10:15 am.
I wish everyone a great month. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein
Principal

PTA NEWS
October has been a busy month for the Sherwood PTA. Our Fall Book Fair was a huge
success. It was so great to see the excitement in school while the kids picked out their books. Our “All for Books” coin challenge during our book fair raised over $260 in books for the Sherwood library. Scholastic matches our donation by donating 260 books to three charities in communities. Great Job Sherwood!!
The Sherwood PTA Food Drive is ongoing until November 14th. Please send in donations of
non-perishable Thanksgiving items to school. Together we can make a difference. Grade
level donation requests are: 2nd Grade - Canned Vegetables; 3rd Grade- Instant Potatoes, Cranberry Sauce, Macaroni and Cheese; 4th Grade - Stuffing Mix, Gravy, Biscuit mix; 5th Grade: Canned Pie Filling, Graham Cracker Pie Crust/Boxed Pie Crust. All Non-Perishable food items can be dropped off at Sherwood Elementary.
Please join us for a Night of Giving on November 14th, at 5:00 pm. Help us put together baskets to donate to local Islip families during the Thanksgiving holiday. Remember, if one CAN make a difference… Imagine what more CAN do!
Join us for our Fall Family Fun Night on Friday, November 16th, 7:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The cost is $10 per family. You are invited to be a contestant on Sherwood’s own Minute to Win It. Come compete in 60 second games for prizes. We will also be collecting donations of toiletries to help local families in need. Suggested items for donations are shampoo, toothpaste, soap, deodorant.
A special thanks to Coyle’s Ice Cream for hosting our ice cream fundraiser. What a great night
for Sherwood and the Islip Community!
Remember to keep sending in your Box Tops! We collected $279 in September. The winning
class with the most Box Tops collected was Ms.Davis' and Ms. Kruger’s third grade class. A
special shout out to Ella Evans - 100 Box Tops, Elaine Biscari - 65 Box Tops, and Casey Indick - 60 Box Tops. Help us reach our 2018-2019 fundraising goal of $2000!
Throughout the year, the PTA will provide many programs and events for your kids that will be
fun and educational. Your PTA membership helps fund these programs. It will also make sure
that you stay up to date on PTA and other school events throughout the year. There are many
opportunities to volunteer. Remember, no one can do everything, but everyone can do
something!
Our next PTA meeting is on November 14th at 7pm. Join us for “Coffee with the Principal” . This will be a question and answer session with Mr. Walerstein!!

From the Health Office
In an effort to maintain the healthiest environment for our students, I have provided some important guidelines:
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
- Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever without using fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children home with a fever will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
- Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
- Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or a hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
- Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food, or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue. When a tissue is unavailable, children should cover their coughs and sneezes using an elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of their hand.
Thank you for your continued cooperation!
NOTE: As the weather gets colder, we will continue to try and get the students outside for recess. Please be sure that your children come to school with appropriate clothing to go outside.

Happenings in Mrs. Beck's Class
Mrs. Beck’s 4th graders, with guidance and support from Mr. Brush, enjoyed our very first Mystery Skype! Students used map skills and deductive reasoning to locate another 4th grade class across the country while Skyping in real time!
After asking questions like “Is your state West of Kansas?” or “Does your state border the Pacific Ocean?” students were able to narrow down where the other class was located; they were all the way in Cheyenne, Wyoming! What a great experience to support our social studies curriculum and make learning FUN! We even shared some facts about Long Island after their class guessed that we were in New York State. They could not believe how close we are to the ocean! We are looking forward to more Mystery Skyping in the future! #SesRoom20 #GoSES
