Metaphor
Definition: Compares two unlike things.
Example: "The sea was as flat as a plate-glass window." From The Most Dangerous Games
Personification
Definition: Gives human characteristics to something nonhuman.
Example: "In May and June there was no rain and the crops withered, curled up, then died under the thirsty sun." From ''The Scarlet Ibis''
Hyperbole
Definition: It exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Example: ''But the money was slowly running out and we were starving to death.'' From The Hunger Games.
Alliteration
Definition: The repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words.
Example: ''I noticed him, a boy with blonde hair peering out from behind his mothers back.'' From The Hunger Games.
Simile
Definition: a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing using like or as.
Example: "Giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide open jaws." From ''The Most Dangerous Game''
