Oratia District School Newsletter
Week 4 - 10 November 2022
Message from Ms Linda
Tēnā koutou katoa. Nau mai ki te whānau o te Orātia. Zdravo. Talofa lava. Ni hao. Kia orana. Namaste. Greetings Orātia whānau.
Every week this term seems full of exciting events and actitivities that range from the cultural to the sporting. There are celebrations of learning planned for Arawhata families to come and share in and athletics events on the horizon. Our big Colour Run fundraiser for the final amount to go towards our junior playground is also coming up. Please share your child's Raise It fundraiser page to all your friends and family so we can spread the load of raising this last amount, especially at this time of year.
On Wednesday we had hundreds of grandparents and whānau in our school sharing in our Nature by Design (Flower Show) celebration. Apparently car parking was at a premium, and we had a steady stream of visitors all morning. The hall was filled with amazingly creative arrangements of flowers and greenery, pressed flowers and terrariums. It was so good to see the pride and enjoyment on our students' faces as they placed their creations on the hall tables. It seems like all the visitors had a wonderful time too based on the feedback they gave me. After so many years of having to stay away from school gatherings, we all were happy to be back on site together. The Calendar Art was also on display and available for ordering. Thank you very much to all those who came for the show and the shared morning tea classes put on for their visitors. We loved having you with us. Thanks also to the Parent Network who prepared cups of tea and coffeee for our visitors.
On Tuesday, Deputy Principal Matt Moncur, took a group of our Travelwise leaders to an end of year celebration at The Cloud on the waterfront. They had a great time and came away with a Gold award for their efforts over the year to make travel to and from our school safer for all our community. Well done to all our Travelwise leaders. We are really proud of you.
Keep an eye on the calendar on our school website for dates for upcoming events and activities that you might be invited to. We hope to see many of you here in school between now and the end of the term.
Take care and stay safe. Kia kaha, kia atawhai.
Ngā mihi nui, Ms Linda

Grandparents/Whānau Day 2022
The school was humming with happy children and whānau yesterday for our annual Grandparents and Whānau Day/Nature by Design Day. Classes were open for family members to help students with any last touches on their 'Nature by Design' project and to share general class time activities. A shared morning tea was enjoyed across all syndicates and the hall was filled with wonderful flowers and treasures for all to enjoy. Our Calendar Art is still available to order - please see details below. A big thank you to our Parent Network who helped our in many ways to make the day run smoothly.
Travelwise Schools Celebration
On Tuesday our school Travelwise leaders attended the Travelwise Schools Celebration put on by Auckland Transport at The Cloud on Queen's Wharf. We were able to travel by train for no cost and this was an exciting experience. The day consisted of a scavenger hunt through Wynyard Quarter, activities promoting active, safe travel and an awards ceremony where our school was awarded gold status as a Travelwise School for implementing our Safe School Travel Plan. You may recall seeing them out on the roadside with their placards for the Back to School slow down around schools campaign. Tino pai to our Travelwise leaders for their hard mahi this year.
Oratia School enrolment zone update
The Oratia School Board of Trustees has moved to adopt and accept the Ministry of Education proposal of a minor amendment of Oratia School’s enrolment scheme to include the Selo development on Glengarry Road. This will help share the influx of students from the new development along that portion of road between Oratia School and Prospect School. Additionally, the remainder of the zone has been redrawn to land parcels, but this does not change the zone boundaries besides adding visual clarity. For further information on our school enrolment scheme please see our school website.

Introducing wrestling to some of our tamariki
Last week we had Abdula from Club Physical Wrestlers run some introductory sessions with Orātia students. They were taught some basic balance activities and how to use their body to defend against opponents. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to try a sport that they may not normally see.
