Celebrating Diversity @ Alta Vista
The Importance of Celebrating Diversity
As the winter season begins to enter our classrooms, it is important to celebrate the cultures and traditions of our diverse community. Our students represent a plethora of backgrounds, ethnicities, languages, and religions. Celebrating these differences builds curiosity, tolerance, and respect. I want to encourage you to use the next few weeks to open the doors to your classroom and learn about winter holidays from around the world. The more our students become aware of other cultures, the more they will be able to recognize the beauty in the diversity that surrounds us.
Winter Holiday Ideas
- Reach out to your families. Allow your students to become the experts as they share the traditions in their homes.
- Research and learn! I've created a Winter Holiday Resources folder in our AV Shared folder in Drive. It contains more than two dozen resources from Teachers Pay Teachers. It includes details for research projects, classroom activities, cracking the code/escape room games, and cross-curricular learning. Please feel free to upload any resources that you would like to share with others.
- The Library has a variety of books on winter holidays and customs. Lisa can point you in the direction of these in-house resources. Please let us know the titles of any books that should be added to our collection.
- Website Links. The links below provide an overview of winter holidays, along with some ideas for classroom activities. The last link is a collection of interesting holiday images from around the globe.
