PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Dear Families;

I hope you had an opportunity to watch our Back to School Night video last night but in case you missed it, here is the link Arleta Back to School Night 2020. Just as we were about to make it live last night we discovered a technical problem but thanks to some great work by Treasa Street and Alexis Tanner we were able to get it out anyway...just a little late. I haven’t made it through all of the presentations but what I’ve seen is very informative so I hope you enjoy what you watch. Thank you to all of the teachers.

Many people had difficulty accessing the Google Form I made available in last week’s Dolphin Digest to directly ask me questions about this school year. This link should be more reliable. Questions for Mr. Horn I’ll include answers in the next Dolphin Digest.

The highlight of my week was joining Ms. Kuether in visiting 7 classrooms today!! It was so wonderful to see the students and be reminded of how much fun it’s going to be when we all get back together.

Thank you all and have a great weekend.

John Horn

Join the next Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting on October 13th at 6pm via Zoom. A link to join online will be sent out closer to the date.

JOIN THE PTA TODAY!

The Arleta PTA membership drive is underway! Memberships for the 2020-2021 school year are $10. Join today: http://www.arletapta.org/ways-to-help---join.html

Why should I join the Arleta PTA?
PTA membership and dues support our school community by funding educational needs, advocating on behalf of students and educators at the local, state, and national levels, and building an inclusive school community for all families. With the support of Arleta PTA members, we have provided grants to allow teachers to choose classroom tools that benefit the needs of their students, hosted parent/family social and educational events, celebrated middle school honor roll students, and last spring made a donation to our partner organization, Urban Gleaners, to support food insecure families during the pandemic.

There are lots of reasons to join the PTA! Everyone is welcome - parents, caregivers, grandparents, teachers/staff, community members. Join today for just $10 by clicking the button below. There are lots of scholarships available too! On the fence about joining?...just request a scholarship to try it out for a year - email ArletaSchoolPTA@gmail.com to sign up with a scholarship.

PPS UPDATE ON ENROLLMENT & PROGRAM BALANCING/ KELLOGG REOPENING

September 29, 2020

Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский

Dear PPS Families,

We want to update you on our progress on the Enrollment and Program Balancing project we have undertaken. The initial work is focused on schools in Southeast Portland in advance of the reopening of Kellogg Middle School.

The Southeast Guiding Coalition has held three meetings this month that focused on orientation to the material and data. They concluded last week with the introduction of a first draft, also called a springboard, proposal. Key highlights of the proposal:

  • Kellogg Middle School would reopen, with the Spanish Dual Language Immersion program that is currently at Mt. Tabor Middle School moving there.
  • Harrison Park, which is currently a K-8 school, would become a middle school.
  • Other K-8 schools (Arleta, Bridger, Creston, Lent and Marysville) will be converted into K-5 schools.

Feeder patterns, boundaries and shifts to DLI programs were also proposed. Details can be seen in the first draft document. This is a starting point of possible options for the Southeast Guiding Coalition to think about, and they will continue to work together in October to ask questions and develop additional versions of a possible plan.

There are virtual open houses on October 22 and December 3 that will be open to all, a community survey, and will conclude with a final Phase 1 recommendation on December 17.

Read more and get meeting agendas, materials, minutes and videos at the Enrollment and Program Balancing website.

PPS UPDATE ON MAPS TEST INFO

September 28, 2020

Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский

Dear PPS Families,

One of the tools PPS uses to help teachers understand students' learning needs is the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. We had planned to conduct MAP assessments over the next four weeks. However, given the numerous challenges all of us are navigating right now, and considering the feedback we have heard from families and educators, we have suspended MAP assessments for all students this fall. We will re-evaluate the opportunity for assessments later in the school year.

TWO SCREENS FOR TEACHERS

Just as families have been working to set up their home learning space, teachers have worked to set up their home classroom. One need that has been raised is getting teachers set up with a second screen so they can view their students and their lessons simultaneously. A new nonprofit is working to fulfill the need by connecting donors with teachers that request a monitor. If you are able to help, check out Two Screens for Teachers to make a donation - https://www.twoscreensforteachers.org/
