A Word of Advice
Gap Years & Short Term Positions
The gap year is a period of time, usually one or two years following graduation, when students take a break from education to work or volunteer before continuing with graduate/professional school or starting a longer-term job. These short-term experiences help students explore career paths, gain experience, and network. In some instances, these experiences can turn into longer-term opportunities!
Questions to consider when determining which gap year opportunity is right for you:
- Why do you want to take a gap year? How does a gap year fit with your future goals?
- Are you interested in expanding your resume, living independently, clarifying your interests, or experiencing a different culture?
- What are your options?
Resources for exploring gap year opportunities:
- Visit the Career Center's extensive job listings page and scroll to the section "Year of Service/Gap Year"
- Visit the Gap Year Association's site for various videos relating to the gap year
Lastly, plan ahead!
Giving yourself ample time to plan is useful for avoiding missing deadlines for applications or fellowships. Also, give yourself plenty of time to update any international travel documents you may need, save money, or book trips in advance.
