π History π
October - Awareness and History
October is Breast Cancer awareness month, as marked by pink everywhere you look. Did you know that, according to the Office on Women's Health (OWH), cancer is the #2 leading cause of death for women? While breast cancer affects women of all ages and races, black women are far more likely to die from it. The OWH attributed this to an exceptionally aggressive form of breast cancer often found in black women. The CDC recommends, regular screening and making healthy life choices like avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol and maintaining a healthy weight.
October is LGBTQA+ history month! *Disclaimer - This is in no way a complete history.
In the 1940's homosexuality was classified by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as a mental illness. This classification disqualified anyone that identified as homosexual to serve in the military. If they did enlist and were subsequently found out they would be criminalized and discharged from the military.
In 1973, thanks to people like Charles Silverstein, homosexuality was removed from the classification of mental illness.
In 1982 the military enacted a policy that explicitly ban homosexuals from joining the military.
In 1993 the policy was replaced with a policy called "Don't ask, Don't tell." Under this policy LGBTQ could join the armed services as long as they remained "in the closet." If they revealed their sexuality they'd be discharged.
In 1996, Bill Clinton signed the "Defense of Marriage Act", which banned ALL same sex marriages.
Nearly two decades of court battles would follow this signing.
In 2010, LGBTQ were listed as a protected class that could not be discriminated against; however, this would prove to take another full decade to be upheld.
In 2011, the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy was repealed and openly gay and lesbian people were able to serve.
In 2012, Washington State joined a growing number of states to legalize same sex marriage.
In 2015, same sex marriage was recognized nationally; although it was still not federally recognized.
In 2020 the supreme court ruled that LGBTQ were protected against workplace discrimination and could not be fired for being LGBTQ.
In 2022, same sex marriage is finally federally recognized under the "Marriage Equality Act."
