A Message from Your Principal, Mrs. Katie Johnson
This week, I want to share a little information about some of the restorative practices used to resolve conflict. Restorative practices focus on repairing the item/space and/or restoring relationships. Restorative practices are based on the belief that everyone has the capacity to take responsibility for their actions and to make amends.
Restorative practices are particularly well-suited for kindergarten through second grade students, who are still developing their social and emotional skills. Restorative practices can help students to learn how to communicate their feelings, resolve conflict peacefully, and take responsibility for their actions.
Here are some examples of how restorative practices may be used in kindergarten through second grade classrooms:
Morning Meetings: Morning meetings are daily meetings where students and teachers come together to share, listen, and build relationships. This time can also be used to address conflict and role play.
Restorative conferences: Restorative conferences are meetings between students often facilitated by teachers or administrator to discuss and resolve conflict. The focus is on identifying the harm that was caused, how to repair the harm, and how to prevent future conflict. Students have the opportunity to share their perspectives on the conflict and brainstorm solutions. Students may work together to develop a plan to resolve the conflict and repair the harm that was cause.
Restorative practices are an important part of creating a positive and supportive school climate. When students learn how to resolve conflict peacefully and take responsibility for their actions, they are more likely to be successful in school and in life.
Respectfully,
Katie Johnson

Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a special day to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served in the United States Military. We are committed to teaching our students about the importance of Veterans Day and the sacrifices that veterans, and their families, have made for our country.
Do you know a Veteran in your family or our community? If so, your child is encouraged to print out THIS FORM and return it to their classroom teacher or the main office by Friday, November 3rd. If you would like us to send a hard copy of this form home with your child, please email our Administrative Assistant, Stephanie Sorn. Please be sure to include all information on the form and a picture of the Veteran.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt invitation to Veterans to join us for a special event in honor of Veterans Day. On November 10th, we will be hosting a light breakfast followed by a Veterans Day assembly at our school. This event is our way of expressing our gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
The morning will begin with a light breakfast in our lounge at 8:00 am. It will be a brief opportunity for Veterans to connect with fellow Veterans and students. Following the breakfast, we will gather in the school gym at 8:15am for a meaningful Veterans Day assembly. We would be honored to have Veterans join us for this special occasion. Please RSVP by November 3rd, so we can make the necessary arrangements.
We look forward honoring and welcoming our Veterans to Elizabeth Ide Elementary School.
