Content Information

Fourth Grade Language Arts, Social Studies

Language Arts: Students are continuing to learn and apply the rules of GUM (grammar, usage, mechanics) in all aspects of their writing. Fourth graders need to continue to encode all written pieces; they will touch each letter/ word and read them with their mouths. This process is the opposite of decoding, or the process in which our brains fix errors automatically. Students must utilize this skill to become better spellers and writers. . Please continue to encourage your student to work carefully and diligently on all tasks. In Reading, we will continue reading Maniac Magee. Please continue to encourage your student/s to read and do their best to meet and exceed set AR goals.
**Please note: Students filling out their monthly Reading calendars indicating they are reading 16 times per month for 25 minutes should be taking AR tests regularly and meeting their quarterly AR goals.**
Social Studies: Students are presenting their timeline projects of North American explorers. From what I have seen, they all look great!

Fourth Grade Math, Science

Math:

Fourth grade will be finishing the fraction unit up this week, and after our break, we will be moving on to decimals.

Please make sure students are working on Math homework every night (Mon-Thurs). It is very important for them to go home and continue to practice the skill that we worked on in class. Students should also be practicing Math facts on Xtramath.com for at least 5 minutes at a time. February calendars will be due on March 3rd. I have told all of the students that when they finish their Xtra Math program (through division), AND they pass all of their timed multiplication tests (through the 12s), they will NOT have to complete the Xtra Math calendars for the rest of the year.

Science: We are currently working in the Force and Motion unit. We are covering many different topics such as speed and direction, energy, and simple machines.

Fifth Grade Language Arts, Social Studies

Language Arts: Students are amidst their study of sentence diagramming, as we focus our GUM efforts on parts of speech. In Reading, students will continue reading The Westing Game. Students continue keeping suspect files in an effort to solve the mystery. They seem to be enjoying it, thus far.

Social Studies: Fifth graders are continuing their study of the American Civil War.

Fifth Grade Math, Science

Math: Fifth grade is almost done with the fraction unit! We are working on converting fractions, decimals, and percents, and after the break, we will be reviewing and getting ready for a big "end of the unit" test. I will put more information on RenWeb in the future.

Science: We just started the Electricity and Magnetism unit last week, and the students really seem to be enjoying it so far! We will cover many different topics such as static, currents, circuits, electromagnets, conductors, insulators, and safety.
