Red River Newsletter
March 2020
Greetings Rider Nation!
We are currently wrapping up a busy winter season here at Red River. The girls hockey team just capped off another competitive season finishing with an overall record of 11-12-2. The KnightRiders entered the state tournament as the 5th seed, but came up short in a 4 OT battle with Devils Lake in the opening round. Kaylee Baker, Morgan Stenseth, and Shaley Richards were named to the all conference team. Our wrestling team qualified 5 wrestlers for the state tournament under 2nd year head coach Andrew Kennedy and had Miciah Peterson place 3rd. Both the boys and girls basketball teams will begin EDC tournament action this week. The boys finished the regular season in 3rd place (15-5) and will host Shanley, while the girls also finished in 3rd place (15-5) and will host Sheyenne. KnightRider gymnastics had yet another great season and finished runner up in the EDC meet. The KnightRiders placed Lauren Swanson, Melody Nguyen, and Delani Barrett on the All Conference Team. Boys swimming and diving, although still fairly young, have seen many career PR’s each meet and have our very own Max Zola and Dan Musselman qualified for this weekend’s state meet in West Fargo! VEX robotics hosted the state tournament 2 weekends ago and saw the program take home its 4th straight state title! What an amazing job by Mr. Ostgarden on building not only Red River’s program, but also helping build youth interest throughout the district. Finally the Red River boys hockey team capped off a roller coaster year with the schools 18th state title! The Riders finished the regular season as the 4th seed in the east, but turned it up a notch to win the East Region Tournament to claim the 1 seed at State and then took care of business there as well defeating Fargo South/Shanley in the title game 4-1. Mason Thingvold, Nick Antonenko, and Connor Arel were all named to the All State Tournament Team and Mason was also named tournament MVP! Congratulations to all teams that have finished their seasons and good luck to those with tournaments approaching!
The fine arts have also had a successful winter with many amazing performances! The manatones and velvetones have been busy serenading people all winter, while the theatre department just wrapped up their winter comedy “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940”. Such an amazing job by the entire cast and crew! We also have many concerts fast approaching with Choir on March 5th (7:00pm), Orchestra on March 10th (7:00pm), and Band on March 12th (7:00pm). All performances will take place in the Red River Performance Hall! Amazing job throughout this year by so many talented Riders!
Student Council recently wrapped up our winter Snow Week and it was a huge success! We kicked things off Monday with Rider Idol 2020! Temi Haastrup & Brooklyn Evens led the vocals for a group called Nostalgia and took home the title with their own rendition of “Memories” by Maroon 5. On Wednesday night we held our annual powder puff volleyball tournament that saw “The Gifted Voices” take home the championship and then once again defeat the staff team at the pep rally. Although this was a sad day for staff egos, we can feel proud that we have instilled the confidence within these students to achieving greatness ☺
During Snow Week, student council also raised money for Make A Wish North Dakota. Through events like the powder puff volleyball tournament, bucket passing at events, and various other events throughout the week, the students raised $2,000! Raising money for such a great cause was definitely the highlight of the week. Thank you to everyone that contributed!
With that, we say goodbye to winter (eventually) and hello to spring! Thank you to the entire Rider Family for all that you do to support our Rider students and community.
With Rider Pride,
Tyler Nelson

HOSA
HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) has been up to great things this February. The students decided to put together a fundraiser for CVIC (Community Violence Intervention Center). They held a Teddy Bear Toss at the Red River vs Central boys basketball game on February 11. Spectators were encouraged to bring new stuffed animals to throw at half time in exchange for a ticket to be entered into a raffle for a $100 Scheels gift card! New stuffed animals and raffle tickets were also available for purchase at the game. Overall the HOSA students from Red River and Central collected 245 new stuffed animals to be donated to the children at CVIC along with a $200 donation!
HOSA students have also begun their clinical rotations and are enjoying visiting different places within the community every other week! Students have learned so much already, and are excited to continue visiting new sites and seeing new things!
