Review of Appropriate Technology at LMES
There are some amazing things being created out there when it comes to wearable technology! There are also some products that have been spotted at LMES that have the potential to be used inappropriately, and it is therefore a good time to review the rules. As stated in the Handbook, students are not allowed to bring technology such as cell phones to school. The only exception is at the upper elementary grades when a parent or guardian has requested permission, and even then the device stays in a locker or backpack, not on the student. We have also seen smart watches popping up in classes. A smart watch is a watch that can do more than tell time - it has the capability to play games, send a message, and/or take audio or video. These devices are not allowed at school unless permission has been granted by myself to the parents. Please be mindful if your child owns one of these devices. They are also usually very expensive, and the school is not responsible should anything happen to them! Thank you.
Literacy at LMES!
Now that the year is fully underway, students in all classrooms are getting down to the real work of reading and writing, and I get the pleasure of seeing it happen across the grade levels! Starting in kindergarten, as shown in the picture above, students get started by reading (and having read to them) award-winning books. Then, they try their hand at writing by drawing a picture and then writing words to accompany it. Here are two kindergarten students proudly displaying their work. By the time they reach the upper elementary grades, they are learning how an author writes about complex characters who change over the course of a book, as depicted in the photos below (taken in a fourth-grade classroom).
Math at LMES!
Have you ever made your own math game? If you were a student at LMES in the fifth-grade, you might do just that! The pictures above show students using math tools to solve problems, including base-ten tiles, calculators, and good old-fashioned pencil-and-paper. In the large photo at the top, two girls created their own math board game to practice subtraction and addition, and are seen trying it out with a group.
