Mrs. Hunt's Classroom News

Blythe Elementary 5th Grade

What are we learning?

Literacy- This week we are studying figurative language and how authors use it in their writing. We will be focusing on Poetry. We will discuss the Titanic and read many poems about the sea. It is important to look at language in different lenses. While we might not understand every word we are reading we can get the gist of what the poem is about and we can use context clue to figure out the meaning of words.

We finished our class book and I have shipped it off to be published. We should receive our books back very soon. Thank you to all of those who participated in purchasing a book. I know it will be a book to be treasured for a very long time.

A tip for home- Encourage your child to read each night for at least 30 minutes. Students can read anything at home. Soon I will be sending passages home for EOG review. Can you believe it is almost 4th quarter???

Math- We are continuing our study of decimals. We have learned how to add, subtract and multiply and we will soon learn how to also divide decimals. Students have been working on a performance task that deals with real world examples of decimals. Students are taking a pretend trip and calculating all of the costs related to the trip.

Science- We are finishing our science unit on Forces and Motion. We will have our unit test this Friday. Our vocab book is also due. Please encourage your student to study their science journal each night before the test. Our next science unit will be about Matter and Energy.

Choices will change after spring break.

Please email me if you would like to have a conference. I have enjoyed the year so far and would love to work together to make sure we finish fifth grade strong.

Middle School

Please make sure that if your child attended the meeting for Bradley Middle School that they return all paperwork by April 6th.

Other middle schools are also having meetings in the upcoming weeks.
