December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month
How do you support your child when they are feeling depressed?
Sadness is something we all experience. It is a normal reaction to a loss or a setback, but it usually passes with a little time. Depression is different. Depression is an ongoing problem, not a passing one. It consists of episodes during which the symptoms last for at least 2 weeks. One sign a child or teen may be experiencing depression is problems at school. This could be due to common depression symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, lack of motivation, a drop in grades, frustration with school, restlessness or difficulty staying awake in class and poor attendance. Depression in young children and teens can look very different from depression in adults. Symptoms can include an irritable/angry mood, unexplained aches and pains, extreme sensitivity to criticism, withdrawing from others, and thoughts of death or suicide.
What can I do to help manage my child’s depression?
Ask for help. Reach out to a mental health agency to talk about your child’s symptoms and inquire if mental health treatment may be helpful for your child. Be patient and know that treatment takes time to work. In the meantime, you can encourage your child to stay active and exercise, even if it is just going for a walk. Help your child keep a regular sleep schedule. Spend time with and talk to your child. In regards to school, you can help your child break down school or work tasks into smaller ones and organize them in order of what needs to get done first.
Here are some ways you can find support:
* National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 24 hours, 7 days/week: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
* Department of Mental Health (DMH) ACCESS, 24 hours, 7 days/week:
1-800-854-7771. DMH can help find counseling resources if your child has Medi-Cal insurance
* If you have private insurance, they are required by law to offer mental health treatment. Check with your provider for a list of therapists.
