RHMS Community Update

May 7, 2022

Principal Letter

Hello Roseway Families,

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) month!

AAPI month is important to our school community for many reasons but especially because our school is home to Portland Public Schools’ Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion (VDLI) Program. The VDLI Program began with its first cohort in 2014, and next year the program will grow to include an 8th grade cohort at Roseway. Needless to say, the program has enriched our entire school community. Over the past year, students in our two current VDLI classes have shared aspects of Vietnamese culture schoolwide. In February they highlighted important traditions with us through their Tet performance and facilitation of a Lion Dance performance that brought our entire school together.

Throughout this month we will learn about important Asian American and Pacific Islanders and their contributions to our community, state, country, and world. An important part of this month’s learning is centering student voice. Students will be active decision makers selecting the AAPI community members we will feature during weekly school wide messages. On May 20 we will host a schoolwide celebration day with student led activities and learning.

Please see the calendar below which features many more opportunities for learning and engagement throughout the month. Thank you to Hội Phụ Huynh for sharing it with us.

You may also enjoy the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center: CARE Package exhibit or an Asia focused geography game.

Finally, it was a true gift last month to be able to gather in person with our PTA for the first time in more than a year. We look forward to meeting again this month!

Please join us in the RHMS library on Tuesday, May 17 from 6:30-8:00
