Firstly Walter Mitty lacks confidence in the story. In the story a parking lot attendant treats Mitty like he does not know anything. To feel confident Mitty daydreams about being a defendant who is confident enough to stand up for himself and dfend himself to try to make him more confident in real life

Secondly Walter Mitty also lacks self esteem in the short story. Walter Mitty is nagged by his wife about what she wants him to do and become and Mitty does not have the courage to speak up for himself. Walter Mitty daydrems about being a leader of a plane who can command and speak for others.

Thirdly Walter is a victim of poor treatment. His wife nagged him anout putting on his gloves and a cop snapped at him. Mitty daydreams about being a respected and honored doctor. Also Mitty daydreams about a firing squad shooting himso he can be free from the poor treatment.
