PTA Training Tips
Sales Tax - do we have to pay?
Your unit, (under the umbrella of the Michigan PTA, qualifies as a 501C3 organization and thus is exempt from paying federal taxes. Which is why we file the IRS 990 postcard.
However state sales tax is a separate issue.
If you are buying something to use as a part of fulfilling your stated mission, say buying mulch to spread in front of the school as part of beautification, you do not have to pay sales tax. If your purchases are to be used as part of a fund-raising activities (a book fair or selling spirit wear) they are taxable because your stated mission is not fundraising. And if it was, you wouldn't qualify as a 501C3.
NOMINATIONS Information you need to know!
- As a PTA president, you are likely not part of the Nominations Committee! Check your bylaws, it should say something to the effect: The President shall "be a member ex officio of all committees except the nominating committee." Make sure you know what YOUR bylaws say!
- Know who your Nominating Committee should be - two members? Three to five members? Your Bylaws will tell you!
- Know WHEN your Nominating Committee needs to present the slate of officers (Yes - your Bylaws will tell you!)
- Nominees MUST give their consent to serve - look for language like: "Only those who have signified their consent to serve if elected shall be nominated for, or elected to, such office" Make sure your Committee Confirms EACH nominee for EACH office!
- Know when your elections must be held - your bylaws will tell you!
- Voting by proxy is prohibited! You must be present to vote! This is one of those items with a # - it comes from National PTA! (This means that you have to be present to vote - you must also be a member to vote!)
- You may have term limits - check your bylaws!!
If you have questions, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LIAISON! We are here to help you! If you would like to have an installation ceremony for your new officers, contact your liaison! We can do that for you!
