What's going on at STEM Academy?
DIRECTOR'S DIALOGUE
STEM Families,
And just like that - November is another month closed and in the books! But what a great month it has been! From getting to hang out with our fellow STEM classmates, to qualifying for nationals, to mentoring elementary students, to venturing out for PBLs, our students have been really active and involved. And we could not do what we do without the support of our outstanding family members. Thank you for your support as we work hard to provide students with meaningful and memorable opportunities as they discover their futures!
As you know, we are in the midst of lottery season. As you visit with friends and family members this holiday season, if you learn of anyone who is looking for the right niche for their child I hope that you will encourage them to apply for STEM Academy. We are currently accepting applications for the 2020-21 school year through our STEM website. Applications for the lottery will be accepted until midnight, January 27, 2020. Current STEM students do not need to re-apply. However, if your current STEM student has a sibling who would like to join the STEM family, you must apply to secure a seat. All applications are due by midnight on January 27th.
Thank you for allowing our STEM family to serve yours!
Jennifer Jensen, M.Ed.

6th Grade Enchanted Rock Excursion
On Wednesday, November 20th, 6th grade students were challenged to navigate their way down to mock base camps using group-designed avalanche structures. At each base camp the avalanche structures were put through a variety of tests to see if they would withstand the elements that occur on Mt. Everest. One camp had a wind test, another had a pressure test where a 5 pound weight was dropped on it (to simulate an avalanche) and another camp had them going across a ladder over a crevasse. Avalanches are a problematic occurrence on Everest and the driving problem was for them to design a soundly structured model of an avalanche shelter.

10th Grade Market Day PBL Showcase
Market day is the culminating event of this interdisciplinary Project Based Learning (PBL) unit combining coursework from AP World History, Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-AP English II and Pre-AP Algebra II. Students specifically examined the available natural resources, particularly metals, in their region in order to make the product and successfully profit from the sale of the product. At Market Day, each team had a booth with a model of a product that they created, and a short video commercial. Each team was given "money" to purchase goods from other booths at the market. Thank you, parents and central office staff, for coming to visit us and give feedback about our products! You make STEM proud!!

STEM’s Annual Field Day-November 22nd
Setting our grade level assignments aside, this all-out friendly competition amongst our high school students was second to none! Students had a great time supporting their teammates, challenging their opponents, and laughing with teachers and our fantastic parent volunteers! Once back on campus the final showdown was -- a spelling bee?! That's right - plot twist!! And the winning team is pictured to the right. Great job, guys! Thank you to Lenny's Subs & Great American Cookies for your generosity! A special shout-out to the Grade Level Team Leaders and Mr. Smiley for pulling this event together! You make STEM proud!!
