CVHS Counseling Weekly Update
January 22, 2021; New semester edition.
A word about Schedule Changes from your counselors.
A high school schedule is, and has always been, a big puzzle; each student has a unique schedule. If we change one piece of that puzzle we may not be able to put it back together again.
So, right now. your counselor's priority is making sure everyone has a complete and accurate schedule that reflects graduation requirements. You may see classes in your schedule that you did not request due to limited class availability.
Due to the creation of the CVVA, there are extreme limitations to changing student schedules this year. A change to a student schedule is unlikely.
The following reasons for wanting to change a schedule are INVALID and will NOT be fulfilled.
· Changing a teacher
· Changing to be with friends
· Changing to have a class during a different hour
· Changing electives that you selected
If you feel that you have a valid reason to change a schedule, please read and complete the information here: http://cvhsguidance.weebly.com/schedule-changes.html
In the spring, you will have 100% input in requesting your schedule just like for next school year you did last spring when you picked your current classes.
What bus am I on?
Seems like there have been a few calls in regards to student bus schedules.
Each student has their bus information on their PowerSchool Student Portal. We are not sure how it looks on a PowerSchool smartphone app but on the PowerSchool website, it’s on the left-hand side. Please double-check information over the weekend because it could possibly change or have an update.
Where and when to arrive on January 25 or 26th
What to do in the hallways?
What can I expect in the classroom?
What about the cafeteria?
Welcome back...again...
The week of January 25 will be "Welcome Week" at CVHS. For those students returning to in-person learning, all the teachers and staff will be helping students (especially 9th and 10th-grade students) get comfortable with the school buildings.
You should have received an email saying what group you are in (A or B). If you didn't can send your counselor a quick email and get back to you. Many hours were spent trying to balance the groups in each class so counselors are not able to change groups.
You should be able to see your 2nd-semester schedule in PowerSchool. Be aware that we are still making some adjustments to some student's schedules. So don't be surprised if something changes for Monday or Tuesday.
For those students returning to in-person instruction:
To keep you safe, the counselors will continue to be available through:
- drop-in office hours (link is on Schoology)
- Teams (chat or video/audio conference)
- Schoology messages
- Phone calls
- Additionally, in-person for an immediate personal concern (more details next week on this option).

I'm in the Chippewa Valley Virtual Academy CVVA, how will my day change?
Students in the Chippewa Valley Virtual Academy (CVVA) will NOT be coming back to in-person learning. CVVA students will remain online from home for semester 2. The way you access and experience your classes will not change on January 25th.
Your counselors will continue to support you remotely as the school opens for in-person learning.
Do you have a class at Dakota? Here is a shuttle bus schedule.
Alma College Virtual Admissions

Here are the details for the event on 2/3 from 10:30am -12 pm.
Any student who wants to apply will need have the counselors send me 1) their high school transcript and 2) a writing sample. During the virtual presentation, students will complete an application with me that is shorter than our official one online. Freshman
Mid-Year Survival Tips for High School Freshmen
Your freshman year of high school is all about trial and error. This is not the year to be thinking excessively about SAT/ACT testing, or college applications, though it’s totally acceptable to begin thinking about these things. Rather, your first year of high school should be a year of exploration. This is the year where you can get the hang of your new classes, explore your new campus (see most of you next week 🙂),try out some new interests (even virtually) and get to know yourself better!
If you’ve found that you’re halfway through your first year of high school and still wondering what it is that you’re supposed to be doing, read these survival tips for more information on how to make your high school experience the best it could be.
In the classroom
Bond with teachers
Take the opportunity in your first year to build up relationships with your new teachers. Since starting high school you’ve been introduced to a whole new set of teachers. In your very first semester, you’ve learned quite a bit about their teaching styles and coursework expectations. Now, in the second semester, you should be thinking about how to build relationships with teachers. Be sure to ask questions and participate during class or TEAMS meetings to show your interest in the subject matter and to help you pay better attention.
Do your homework
It should be obvious, but the work that you put in is what you’ll get out of your high school experience— get in the habit of putting in the most effort that you can. Devote at least 20 minutes per day (or even more) to each subject. Review the information that you learned in class that day — you will be surprised at how much it will help you retain information!
Re-evaluate your academic organization. This might mean making weekly to-do lists instead of daily ones, or it might even mean mapping out all your deadlines and making a study plan for each class. Be sure to avoid using the infamous “everything folder”—organize your homework by subject rather than simply tossing everything into one huge accordion folder.
Outside the classroom
Whether in person or attending virtually, be active in extracurriculars
Aside from academics, in your first year of high school you should try to find an extracurricular activity (or two)! Consider trying out a new sport, join a club (there are many being held virtually), or even trying your hand at theater. You never know what you might be good at. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, because you may end up surprising yourself.
Be social
Once we're able, be sure to attend your school’s social events like homecoming, prom, football games, etc. — these events are a great way to meet new people and make new friends, and they’re also a ton of fun! Try branching out from your friends in middle school and approaching some new people. After all, you’re not the only new student here—everyone is new and hoping to make new friends. You should make at least one new friend in each class that you have—you never know where the connection will lead you!
Have fun
Finally, don’t forget to have fun in your freshman year. This is a low-stakes time that will allow you to try new things, meet new people, and establish good habits. Make the best of it and don’t be afraid to DREAM BIG!!
