September 21, 2020 Parent Update
Greetings Imagine Broward Families!
We realize what is on everyone's mind is when will the school reopen, what will it look like for both in person and online learning and will my child be safe?
Now that Broward County has moved to Phase 2, Imagine Broward will be offering in person on campus instruction to students in the near future. If things progress as expected with the District we are planning the start date of Monday October 5th. The District is proposing their reopening plan to the school board on Tuesday September 22 for approval. An Imagine Broward survey to register for either online or in person instruction is below. Please complete the the survey for each student. We know the decision you make to either have your student continue online learning or transition back to on campus in person learning is a tough and important decision. The survey will be open until Friday September 25. We are asking parents to commit to their decision until the end of 2nd quarter so the school and teachers can plan accordingly. If a family's circumstances change, administration will review each request on a case by case basis.
Remember: Broward County Public Schools will most likely be sending a survey to parents, you do NOT need to complete that survey.
To better help you make your decision, we are providing key points on each learning option. Please note our school schedule will slightly change from the online schedule as we go back to our adjusted master schedule. Details will follow as soon as we get our survey results.
In Person Learning:
Imagine Broward has been preparing all summer for this pivot back to in person learning by following local and state departments as well as CDC guidelines in reference to the reopening of schools.
Preparations include:
- Increased sanitizing of the school throughout the day
- Electrostatic machines for nightly cleaning
- Sanitizing products provided in each classroom
- Increased hand washing education and times
- Instructional signs posted throughout the school
- Social distancing floor decals and directional arrows posted
- Touchless wall mounted hand sanitizing dispensers in each classroom
- Teachers were provided masks, face shields, and covid kits
- Touchless stand alone hand sanitizing dispensers at each entrance and exit
- Touchless water bottle filling stations
To maintain the safety of our students and staff the following protocols are in place:
- Staff to wear face masks at all times
- Students to wear face masks at all times except when eating lunch and breakfast and also outside for PE and FunFit when social distancing can be maintained
- Students to bring their own water bottles clearly labeled with their first and last name
- Highly recommended that students wear a face mask lanyard attached to their mask so masks do not get lost, dirtied, etc
- Isolation room with health department protocols if any person becomes sick during the school day
- Lunch being delivered and eaten in the classrooms
- Breakfast grab and go bags available at entrance doors in the morning and eaten in the classroom
- Specials (except for PE) to be taught in students' classroom
- Morning car line drop off at four locations in the front of the building with 4 entry points to maintain social distancing.
- Students will have their temperature checked in their car before being allowed in building
- Afternoon dismissal car line with dismissal software to maintain social distancing. Students to remain in classroom until called.
- Students requiring before care will have a separate drop off location in the back of the school.
Normally, the first 2-3 weeks of school car line is slower than normal. We thank you in advance for your patience as we make our dismissal process efficient while at the same time ensuring the safety of our students and staff.
How does in person learning look?
As the survey numbers are collected, considerations for the learning of all students will be considered. Our goal is to have in person students transition back to a sense of normalcy as teachers continue to provide education to online students. We are fortunate that all teachers received brand new touchscreen laptops and TVs in their classrooms this summer. We have provided teacher training on extending and casting to their TVs so students in the classroom can receive instruction without having to be on a laptop full time. Google classroom will continue. In person students can expect more live interaction and will complete assignments and independent practice on a laptop. From parent feedback, we are expecting in person numbers for lower elementary to be high. If this is the case, teachers will be able to move to more paper based traditional instruction.
We have ordered 250 laptops months ago so our school can be one to one. To date, delivery has been delayed due to Covid-19. Delivery is expected by November. We will keep you updated.
Online Learning:
If you choose to continue with online learning, Google classroom will continue. If you borrowed a laptop from the school, your child may continue using the laptop until they return to school. The school day hours will go back to adjusted normal hours to allow for transition of students on campus. For example, specials classes will be returning to 45 minutes instead of 30 minutes and teachers may be able to take their students outside for FunFit.
Survey:
Our goal is to keep students with their current teachers. However, please note that based on survey results, the school may have to make class changes if needed. Please fill out the survey below for each of your children. You will be asked your homeroom teacher (call the front office if unsure), needs for before and after care, and laptop availability.
PLEASE COMPLETE SURVEY FOR EACH OF YOUR CHILDREN BY FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25

We understand that you may have more specific questions regarding the transition. A parent back to school guide will be provided with final details. Know that teachers have been preparing for the transition and are also prepared to move back to online learning if the environment requires it. Our VPK has successfully been in operation for the past three weeks with in person learning.

SLA Curbside Meal Pickup and Broward County's Grab N Go
Curbside Meal Pickup In addition to SLA/Imagine Broward offering meals, you can go to your zoned or any public school for meal pickups. From the District: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the summer meals flexibility waiver, now allowing Broward County Public Schools to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to all children 18 years and younger – regardless of meal eligibility status and even if they don’t attend a BCPS school. Grab-and-Go meals are available at all BCPS elementary, middle and high schools, every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. while the District continues instruction through eLearning. Children or their parents can pick up bundles that include multiple meals by walking or driving to the school’s car or bus loop. If the child is not present, parents are required to provide identification for their child, which includes student ID, report card or birth certificate. The ID must be presented at each meal distribution. Meals are only provided in bundles and are not available for individual meal purchase. Adults are welcome to purchase meal bundles for $1.80 per breakfast and $2.75 per lunch."
Through SLA, we are offering curbside pickup for our families who are interested. Meals can be picked up at the school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 to 1:00 at Imagine Broward. The cost is the regular in person fee or the reduced price for the free and reduced lunch members. HOWEVER starting Wednesday meals will be free for all students. The curbside meal pickup consists of breakfast and lunch for two days (Monday) and three days (Wednesday). Please call the front office or email imagine.broward@imagineschools.org each week to let us know if you are coming so we can plan.
i-Ready Assessments
Imagine Broward will begin i-Ready assessments for Reading this Wednesday.
What is i-Ready?
i-Ready is an online program for reading that will help your student’s teacher(s) determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher(s) to meet your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your student’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Personalized Instruction.
Learn more about i-Ready by watching this video!
i-Ready Diagnostic:
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your student a score or grade, but instead to determine how best to support your student’s learning.

i-Ready Personalized Instruction: i-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your student can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your student engaged as they learn.

Flu Season Preparedness and Covid-19
RATIONALE: Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses which spreads mainly from person to person. The flu is caused by the influenza viruses and COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. Because some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the differences on symptoms alone and testing may be needed to confirm a diagnosis. Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 are different from the flu virus and may include a change in or loss of taste or smell. Although most individuals who become infected with influenza viruses will recover, influenza can cause serious illness and death particularly among older adults, very young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. Currently there is no vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. According to the CDC estimated influenza-associated deaths average 49,000 people annually. Health experts and CDC has made the following recommendations to help prevent the spread of the influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus.
• Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing
• Wash hands often with proper handwashing techniques and/or use hand sanitizers
• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth
• Stay home when sick and encourage parents of sick children to keep them at home
• Do not share eating utensils, drinking glasses or other personal items
• Touching an inanimate object with flu viruses on it, such as doorknobs, elevator buttons, desktops, and then touching the mouth or nose also may infect people; therefore, wash hands/use hand sanitizers
• Wear mask and practice physical distancing
Attached is a flyer of flu and COVID-19 signs and symptoms here.
