FMS Counseling: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo
Needing to see the school counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.
Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.
Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208
Information on Suicide Curriculum
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, pursuant to Section 170.048, RSMo, developed a model policy for suicide awareness and prevention. All school districts had to have a policy in place by July 1, 2018. One of the components of this policy is starting no later than fifth grade, students will receive age-appropriate information and instruction on suicide awareness and prevention.
Fulton Middle School Counselors will be presenting information to students about mental health, well-being and suicide prevention and awareness October 22nd , 23rd and 24th. Middle school and high school lessons will address the following topics at an age-appropriate level:
Promotion of a climate that encourages peer referral and which emphasizes school connectedness.
Recognition of the signs that they or peers are at risk for suicide.
Identification of issues that may lead to suicide including depression, anxiety, anger, and drug/alcohol dependency.
Directive to not make promises of confidence when they are concerned about peer suicide.
Identification of a trusted adult on campus with whom students can discuss concerns about suicide.
If you would like to review the suicide curriculum for a particular grade level or if you have questions about your child’s participation or would prefer your child not participate in the curriculum, please contact your child’s school counselor.

News from the Art Room
Hello! Just wanted to give a reminder that the end of the Quarter is this Thursday 10/15/19. I will be welcoming new 6th Graders on Friday! Looking forward to working with new faces, and getting to know this new group.
What We Are Doing
6th Grade
This week will conclude the quarter as we wrap up with our final objective and get some quick practice on watercolor techniques for those who are finishing our torn paper animals. .
Sixth Grade will rotate to their new Explo classes and we will spend some time getting to know classroom procedures, and jumping right in to new lessons beginning next week.
7th Grade Semester
Students have started our next objective: ELO 2 where students will analyze and evaluate art. Students in this unit will be looking at the Elements and Principles of Art and Design, and becoming an expert on at least one element or principle, by creating a mini poster. Students will work with a partner who will be also creating a mini poster on the corresponding element or principle. Students will share and talk about their work to gain an overall knowledge of the elements and principles.

8th Grade Semester
ELO4:Students will explain the connections between art and the world around them.
This unit we will look at a few different paintings but will focus on Grant Woods American Gothic. Students will learn about Grant Woods Painting, and create a parody or modern telling of this work. Coined as one of the most spoofed paintings in American Art, Grant Woods somber depiction of American Life was originally panned by critics but was later praised in its depiction.
Students will learn about the parts of a portrait and begin making steps in creating portraits to scale with adding a structure of a foreground, middle ground and background.
