Principal's Corner: Empathy and Trauma Informed Care
I learned a LOT around empathy and I left with practical, simple ideas. I have asked teachers to reflect on what challenged them, what was affirmed, and what simple thing they will do moving forward. I reflected myself in a blog post on these three things.
We also had our special education team and our school counselor, along with other district leaders attend a trauma informed classroom to grow their learning on how to best meet kids' needs socially, emotionally and academic, the whole child. Teachers with whom I spoke said they could go back to spend more time to really dig in deeper and there are ideas to take back to the Marshall community.
Last, a sincere thank you for sharing about your child during conferences, and simply sharing your child with us at MHS. For those who signed in, we had roughly 55 families meet with teachers, including myself. I learned a LOT from listening to parents discuss their child, and I have identified and planned some next steps to better support learners as a result.
Mrs. Rebecca Schneider, our school counselor, also hosted a rep from UW-Madison to deliver information about Financial Aid for college during the October 23 conferences.
Reminder: Barricade Drill November 18
We will have a Barricade Drill on November 18 during our 'Homeroom' time. Please see the attached document for communication about this drill, the intended goal and the procedure we will follow:

Welcome Heidi Woods, BSN Rn
My name is Heidi Woods and I am the new district nurse at Marshall.
My background is a bit diverse. I have both a bachelor's and master's degree in counseling psychology and originally started out in the working world as a counselor for both children and adults. After receiving my master's degree, I worked in healthcare administration at the American Academy of Pediatrics.
After I had my children, I went back to school to get a degree in nursing. I have been working as a nurse for 17 years. My background includes emergency room nursing, critical care, clinic, home health and hospice. Now, I am very happy to have found a spot at Marshall to dedicate my time to the staff and students.
I have two boys who I raised a single mom and am extremely proud of the young men they have become. As anyone close to me knows, my dedication to children is fierce and I will always be an advocate to empower children to reach their potential in mind, health and spirit.
