Mrs. Williams's Weekly Math Update
August 31 - September 4, 2015
Timed Math Facts
Wow! We've had 73% of our class test-out of timed math facts. I am so very proud of how hard the students have worked to accomplish this goal. We will test through September 8 and I'm confident we will reach 100%. Please continue to work each night with your child.
This Week
Graded math tests went home last Friday. If your child scored below 70%, there will be an opportunity to re-test this Friday. I am working with small groups during lunchtime to provide extra support and instruction. Additional practice will also come home. Traditionally, the lowest scores of the year are made on the first test because students are not yet into the routine of testing. Do not panic! I will work closely with your child to ensure he/she is successful and feels confident about math.
This week's skills include:
- 2.4 number stories
- 2.7 estimating products
- 2.8 multiplication of whole numbers and decimals
- Statistics: mean, median, mode, range
As a note, I will present the traditional algorithm for multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. This is the preferred algorithm for Middle School Math. We will not use the lattice algorithm.
