The internet can be a big, creepy place. There are a lot of people who want to do awful things with your information. You can stay safe by doing these simple things.

Be Careful With Personal Information

  • Make sure that the website that you are using is secure
  • Check the URL on the top of the screen for an HTTPS:// before the website name
  • Read the Website's Privacy Policy to make sure the website is secure
  • Never give out your username and password for ANYTHING you are not sure about

Data Mining

  • Many companies buy your personal information from places like Google
  • They can also track your search and website history
  • Some companies use this information to tailor advertisements to you
  • Other people use that information to steal your Identity

Identity Theft

  • People use your identity or personal information to wreak havoc on your money
  • Many people steal identities to steal their money from credit or debt cards
  • All losses annually can tally up to about $5 billion lost from theft
  • 100 million Americans are at risk for having their identity stolen
  • Secure all of your personal information to make sure you aren't one of that 100 million

Social Media

  • Never friend people you don't know on social media
  • Make sure that you are not clicking on the sketchy advertisements
  • Make sure that you have a safe username and password that cannot be hacked easily
  • Be a kind person on the internet. Don't be a jerk
  • Don't harass people online
  • Don't give out any personal information to anybody


  • 2/3 of All people on the internet are victims to some form of cybercrime
  • Harassment on the internet has grown 50% in the last 5 years
  • Approximately $485,253,871 was lost in 2011 due to cybercrime
