Benfield Family Newsletter

October 15, 2021

Greetings Benfield Families!

With the halfway point of the first marking period finished, I wanted to remind you to check the Parent Portal for interim grades. We will not be sending paper interim reports home.

Halloween is coming up and, the classroom teachers will be communicating with the room parents about the events. The morning will begin with a costume parade, so please allow your child to wear their costume to school. Costumes need to be school appropriate, not depicting violence, and be easy to wear during learning.

If you have not completed the AACPS Emergency Form, please click on the link near the end of the newsletter and complete this form. Thank you!

Don't forget to mark your calendar for our first family night at Little Carmine's next Wednesday between 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The flyer is at the end of this newsletter. We hope to see you there!

For students who walk or ride their bike to school, please make sure they do not arrive before 9:15 a.m. We have had an increase in students arriving before 9:00 a.m. and there is no one on staff to supervise them in the morning before 9:15 a.m.

School Meals

Breakfast

Breakfast is served each morning from 9:15 - 9:25 a.m. for students who would like to eat their morning meal at school. Just like the lunches, the breakfast is free of charge for all children this school year. With breakfast, students grab their breakfast and take it to their classrooms to eat. We do not have children eating in the cafeteria.

We have seen an increase in the number of students, almost 200 students, who are getting breakfast in the morning, so I wanted you to be aware that our cafeteria manager, Mrs. Davis, is able to provide an alternative meal for those with allergies. However, students need to be able to articulate that they are allergic to items on the menu. Mrs. Davis has a menu that children can review and are expected to let her know they cannot eat certain items on the list.

If your child has allergies, I encourage you to talk to them about what items they can and cannot eat. If you would like more information about the menu and alternative items, please contact Mrs. Davis at gmdavis@aacps.org.

Bus Transportation

I am sure you are aware that the county is experiencing many challenges with bus transportation this year due to a lack of drivers. Fortunately, Benfield has not had too many challenges, but we do have late buses from time to time.

Most late buses occur in the afternoon, and we are not always notified. If a bus is late, past 4:10 p.m., our secretaries call the bus company to determine the estimated arrival time. A Connect Ed message is then sent to families impacted by that bus. We notify families as soon as we become aware of a late bus.

ID Reminder

All visitors to Benfield must have an ID to be scanned in Raptor. This applies to when picking up your child early, meeting with a teacher, volunteering, etc.
