Always a hurricane at BCMS! Shew!
We are always rolling 100 miles an hour at BCMS! While we are so thankful that the Hurricane is avoiding us, we continue to hustle to do great things for our scholars.Thank you to our PE department who is managing to maintain lessons on active engagement while functioning with no air conditioning! What I'm Reading.... (The •5)
I have started a new fiction Young Adult read this week: Hello, Universe. It is about the drama filled times of middle school relationsihps. Sound familiar?
In keeping with my work with John Hattie, I have been thinking a ton about lesson design and making sure we are maximizing our effect size. I am excited to begin to pilot some work in some classrooms when the next units begin. If we can calculate our own effect size, we will be able to better gauge the effectiveness of the work that we do. Think about this: Success Criteria is critical in the work we do. Scholars need to know how they will know when they have mastered or learned something and they need to know how to assess themselves along the way. Success Criteria works because it taps into human motivation. People tend to compare their current performance with a goal they have set. Where there is a gap between the goal and performance, cognitie dissonance happens and students are excited to close that gap! (See John Hattie)
