April 27, 2020: Distance Learning Week 3
Strand Spotlights and Info:
Dear Voyager Families,
We hope you and your family are well and safe. Thank you for expressing your needs and doing what is best for your family's health and well-being.
The next phase of distance learning in CUSD for TK-5 means "students will be monitored for: engagement in meaningful learning activities around reading, writing, and mathematics, participation in distance learning lessons in ELA and Math, performance in ongoing teacher-created assignments and activities, and informal assessments. The end-of-year report cards will consist of a teacher-developed narrative summary of students’ progress on distance learning activities in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics." You can view the District's Student Grades document here.
We understand that we have families who are dual working households, have deployed spouses/are single-parenting, and/or are coping with immediate and extended family illnesses. We also know many of you are expressing your own and children's fatigue with screens and management of student learning and overwhelm with activities. This next phase of distance learning fulfills our district's obligation to keep records and provide feedback for students and families on report cards at the end of the school year. Teachers will continue to communicate which activities students should submit for review. We will not provide "grades" on specific standards, and students' promotion to the next grade level will NOT be impacted by performance during distance learning.
OUR THEME FOR THE WEEK is FLEXIBILITY: It's important for both families and educators to recognize the potential need for flexibility with schedules and workload. While some you have found a routine that works and are feeling like you and your children are in a groove, others of you are acknowledging a need to make adjustments and take breaks/time off. Please share your individual circumstances, struggles, and capabilities, so that teachers can help differentiate and prioritize for you or acknowledge your need for downtime.
MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD: See the PDF below this section for a special edition of the CA Academic Anchor Newsletter, and here is a link from Military One Source where children can receive a free Month of the Military Child Kit: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDODMILITARYONESOURCE/bulletins/2852c84

Every Monday
Location: Multi-Purpose Rooms at VES (H Street) and Silver Strand Elementary
Distribution Time: 11:00AM - 1:00PM
All families with children 18 and under will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch meals via curb-side pick-up. Students who are receiving meals are encouraged to be physically present at the time of pick-up. Additionally, adults may pick up meals for students not present by printing and submitting this form at the time of pick-up. All meals will be distributed curb-side to decrease the risk of exposure. Only those in cars will be served meals during this pick-up window, no walk ups or bicycles allowed in order to maintain social distancing. If you are unable to pick-up meals by car, please email Charity.Campbell@coronadousd.net on or before Friday, April 3 at noon and we will schedule an alternative window to pick-up a meal.
Tips and Etiquette for Using Online Meeting Platforms (like Zoom)
Dear Families,
You may have begun using Zoom as a way to connect with friends and family groups via video/app. Some teachers may use this feature to connect with your child.
We have some suggestions for safely/appropriately using this tool:
- Your child should not be alone with an adult in an online meetup platform. If your child benefits from one-to-one support from a teacher, counselor, or (other role), plan to be present and available throughout the session.
- Ensure your child and anyone else in the home who may appear on video is appropriately attired.
- Choose a place in the home that is relatively distraction-free and quiet. Discourage pets and other family members from participating unless it's appropriate to do so.
- Have all supplies your child may need readily available.
- If the meeting is academic in nature, please refrain from eating on screen.
- Take the opportunity to teach your child camera/video conference ettiquette--maintain attentiveness and eye contact, remain in view, refrain from entertaining/distracting others.
Minors (under 18) should not create a Zoom account. But important to know is that they don’t need a Zoom account to JOIN a meeting. Therefore, if teachers invite students to a meeting, they will provide the Zoom invite code, and if a teacher wants to hold office hours, they will provide students with the Zoom invite code.
