Your Brain and Stress Presented by Elizabeth Licht and Stacey Vazquez
Tuesday, June 2, 2020 will be our third session of We Are Here, by our very own school psychologist, Stacey Vazquez, and behavior interventionist, Elizabeth Licht. Please join us (even if you haven’t attended the previous sessions) for a conversation about self-care, relaxing our brains and maintaining a sense of calm. The presentation focuses on the brain and how the changes that occur within it in reaction to stress and calm affect one's ability to regulate emotions. We will also talk about how through co-regulation and the help of our mirror neurons, adults can teach self-regulation skills to children. Stacy and Elizabeth hope to see you there!

End of Year Drive Thru Celebration and Item Pick Up!
We would like to invite you to join us for the end of the year Drive Thru Celebration for PK-4th grade students which will take place during two different times in order to help accommodate families. On both Thursday, June 11 from 2-6 pm, and on Friday, June 12 from 8-12 pm, staff will line the parking lot, wave like crazy, give long distance air hugs, and blow kisses through face masks to our students and their families. Families will pull into the elementary school, drive through the carpool line, and stop at their child’s grade level tent to retrieve classroom items and their personal belongings from their teacher. All staff will be wearing masks and will be following social distancing guidelines. We ask that families wear masks as well. Students and families will stay in the vehicle the entire time. We are asking that you not get out of your vehicles.
Please click here to view lost and found https://www.smore.com/1rh8p Lost and found items will be bundled with the items you can pick up during the drive thru.

What about 5th graders?
What a unique year for all of us, but especially our fifth graders who all wanted to celebrate their last year of elementary school during a celebration ceremony. So to honor all of our fifth graders we have a special time for 5th grade families to drive through and receive some special items, as well as the student’s personal belongings that may have been left in classrooms or lockers. On Thursday, June 11, from 9-11, we invite the 5th grade parents and students to enter behind the elementary school via Brown Street, and enter the access road (where the buses drop off and pick up students). This is where students will receive some very special items their teachers have put together for them (there will be some great surprises!). Parents will then drive up the access road to the middle school where students will be greeted by the middle school administration and some 6th grade teachers (again please do not get out of the vehicles). Parents will then drive back down to the elementary school where there will be more elementary staff handing back classroom items and personal belongings. And lastly, we will give our fifth graders a giant wave as they leave the elementary school for the last time as a fifth grader.

Please show your school spirit and post your pictures on https://www.facebook.com/Hillsboro-Deering-Elementary-School-111526717013799/
Monday 6/1--Show your love for HDES! Wear red and white and/or an HDES shirt. Hang a heart in your window, create a heart with your hands, be creative in showing your love for our school.
Tuesday 6/2--Ice cream day (thank you to Crosby in Mrs. Engle’s first grade class for this idea). What is your favorite ice cream? Draw a picture if you don’t have any ice cream in your freezer. Better yet, write your parents a letter asking them to go buy some and justify why you deserve it!
Wednesday 6/3--Crazy Hair and Crazy Sock Day! Who’s got the wildest hair at HDES? We hope everyone has at least one pair of silly socks to show off!
Thursday 6/4--Dress like a teacher day/costume day! What do you have in your closet that can double as a costume for your favorite teacher or HDES staff member? Or have you been hoping to break out last year’s Halloween costume? Now’s your chance!
Friday 6/5--Beach Day! Who doesn't love the beach?!? Wear your best hat, sunglasses, and flip flops!
And most importantly...share your photos on our FB page or email them to your teacher!
