This Week's Theme: ROOT CAUSE
Have you ever struggled to figure out why a problem keeps "popping up?" Perhaps it's time to find the problem's root cause!
Figuring out the root cause for a problem isn't completely obvious. It helps to try something that little kids do a lot: ask "Why?!" Try asking "why" five times when looking at a problem. Keep going until the problem cannot be broken down any further, or until the reason is something you can control. It may not take exactly five whys: it may take less or it may take more! Your goal is to find the root cause, the underlying reason the problem is occurring.
Here are the steps for "The 5 Whys":
- Start by identifying the problem.
- Answer the question, "Why is this happening?" Identify the concern, influence, or reason.
- Continue asking "why" until you figure out the real reason the problem is occurring. This is the "root cause."
- Now you can devise a solution that addresses the root cause of your problem!
Our videos this week are for everyone!
- The first is a little kid asking "why"! (We've all done it!)
- The second video is an application of "The 5 Whys" that looks at a problem that was occurring at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. Why was the monument falling apart? The answer is surprising!
Can you identify the root cause of a problem you have run into?
