What is Praise and Worship? Why do we do it?
If you were approached today and asked what Praise and Worship is what you say? Some of us think it consists of two fast songs and one slow song. Some of us base it on if they felt chills or goose bumps; if this is you then you think the praise and worship team did their job. Many of us believe that praise and worship can only be experienced on Sundays or Wednesdays. Without a full understanding of what Praise and Worship is, it will be harder for you to become fully engaged in it.
John 4:21-23(MSG) Believe me, woman, the time is coming when you Samaritans who worship the Father neither here at this mountain nor there in Jerusalem. You worship guessing in the dark; we Jews worship in the clear light of day. God’s way of salvation is made available through the Jews. But the time is coming – it has, in fact, come – When what you’re called will not matter and where you go worship will not mater. It is who you are and the way you live that counts before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for; those who simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself – Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirit, their true selves, in adoration.
In John 4 Jesus responds to the woman at the well after she asked Him where was the most fitting place to worship. His response clarifies to the believer that the external things that man focus on do not matter to God; but God is looking for true worshipers, worshipers who worship straight from the heart. This type of worship focuses on the one who created you, and the one who knows you inside and out. Your praise and your life of worship is a direct response of your gratitude, love and thankfulness for all that God is to you and everything He has done for you. When you are engaged in this type of worship, you aren't concerned about who is to the right or to the left of you.
Many of us are familiar with the analogy of cheering for our favorite team or giving a standing ovation for high officials or dignitaries. The truth is, we have a natural tendency to respond to what holds value to us and things that bear meaning and what directly impacts our lives. I know if I cooked a good meal, my family responds to me with praises of how good the meal was. If my husband's favorite football team scored a good play, I hear his cheers of approval echoing throughout the house. Why not respond to the Living God this way; the one who sent His only son to die for your sins, and now you have an opportunity to have eternal life with God. Why not respond to the one who healed your body, or to the one who opened the door when everything else seemed impossible.
I have given some insight on why we praise and worship, but you must also know the difference between the two. Praise is praising God for all that He has done, you can even praise Him in advance for what you know He will do as an act our your faith. It’s just like you would praise your children, spouse or co-worker for a job well done. We praise God by giving Him thanks and telling Him who He is. One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Chronicles 20:6-12, Jehoshaphat begins to praise God in the midst of adversity, as we praise God we remind ourselves of His great Power and all that He is and has already done.
Worship is living a lifestyle of worship before God. It will cause you to live a life of obedience, and you will desire to live a holy life, a life of devotion, where you are continuously reminded of God’s presence in your life. Living this type of lifestyle is your worship. John 13-14 (MSG) Jesus, said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again, Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst – not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life. Living a life of worship will cause you to have an artesian well experience. An artesian well defiles gravity and the natural order of how water flows from a well, it does not need to be pumped primed or drawn out. With this type of well the water bursts out automatically uncontrolled and unrestrained. That’s the way worship should flow out of the life of a believer; so that when you come into the house of God, to respond corporately to God for who He is and all He has done, you will be like that artesian well and Praise and Worship will spring up out of your life like a spring of water that cannot be contained. I challenge you to allow the spring to burst out of your life, and respond to the presence of God.
