4th and 8 at the Miami 23 yard line. Nebraska was trailing Miami 31-24. The ball was snapped and Turner rolled to his right and the slant pattern wasn’t open so he ran and just before the defender hit him he pitched it to the running back Jeff Smith. He got the first down yardage and kept running and dove for the end zone and it was a touchdown. They went for two to win it and Turner got the ball threw a bullet to Jeff Smith and it bounced of his pads. Miami won the National Championship. Tom Osborne played football, basketball and track in high school and was great at all of those sports. He could have went to a Division 1 school to play football but went to Hastings College since that was his home town and that he could play all 3 of those sports. He wasn’t drafted but tried out for San Francisco 49ers but didn’t play much. He went to the Washington Redskins after that. After that he came back to Nebraska and got his masters and married Nancy. They have 3 kids. She was a teacher at school and Tom asked Bob Devaney the Nebraska Head Football Coach if he could be a graduate assistant and Bob said he could. Tom was an assistant when they won the 1971 and 1972 National Championships. When Bob was ready to retire he wanted Tom to be the new head coach. So in 1973 he took over. In 1984 they lost to Miami in the Orange Bowl to win the National Championship 31-30 on a missed 2 point conversion. Since then he has had a Heisman winner Mike Rozier that won it in 1983. He has won 3 National Championships (1994, 1995, 1997).

Genre and Theme

Genre- autobiography

Theme- No matter what people think you can succeed

I think this is a good theme for the book because after Bob retired everyone was surprise that Tom Osborne would be the head coach. He almost didn’t take the job because he thought it would be a lot of pressure to coach Nebraska after Bob Devaney. Tom Osborne won 3 National Championships so he did succeed.
