Is Show choir/Marching band a sport
By: Kayln Cox
Show choir and band should be considered a sport?
You might not know about Show choir and marching band but you might be surprised at how similar they are to sports if not even a sport themselves. When you think of show choir and band it doesn't scream sport usually but maybe if I tell you more you might change your mind. From someone who comes from a line of coaches and athletic directors and has played many many sports take it from me show choir and band are sports.
Schedules
You might think that Marching band or show choir only practice once or twice a week but that is not true we practice all the time. At the beginning of school its a little slow for show choir because we have musical but trust me we still have practice. Marching band practices a lot too you probably know that though since you can hear them till about 9:00 at night. It not only teaches you to have time management in high school but also
Physically Demanding
To be in marching band you have to learn how to carry a heavy instrument for long periods of time while marching. In show choir you have to sing and do challenging dances while in costumes and character shoes. These things are no easy task you have to be trained to do them and have some type of conditioning for your body like breathing exercises, cardio, ect. In show choir we do zumba or some type of cardio, crunches and run in our heels while singing. We are even starting an actual show choir conditioning it's optional but highly recommended due to the high difficulty of the show.
Competitive
Just like any other sport show choir and band compete. we have all day competitions that last until very very late if you make finals. You could compare these competitions to a tournament. Just like any sport we are very serious and competitive about what we do.
Attendance
If you re in a sport you know that if you don't go to school then you can't go to practice that day. It's the same thing for show choir and band programs if you don't got to school you can not go to practice. If you have bad grades you can't compete. If you miss more than 3 practices they can choose to kick you out. That makes it very important to make it to school.
Team Values
Just like any sport you have your team. We all work together to reach our common goal and that is to win and have fun. You learn to love your teammates like family and learn problem solving skills together. We build each other up to get trophy's and to have the best time we can.
Dedication
You can come to every single practice but that won't mean a thing if you aren't dedicated. Going to practice is one thing but making sure you get it in your own time is another thing. Even if you are lying down to go to sleep you should go over your show in your head. You cant win unless everyone puts in work and wants to win as much as you do. You are only as good as your worst person in the group.
sport similarities
Just like you have plays in football show choir and band have to memorize many positions and what to do when you get there. Just like you have a form in golf show choir and band have to have a certain way of dancing or marching even certain ways you hold vowel shapes to sing. It's like many sports have a way they have to do things we have ways we have to do things to. whether your scored by points or an Issma sheet it doesn't matter there are still game rules.
work ethic
Being in show choir or band gives you a very strong work ethic. If you have practice you learn not to slack off. You also learn that working hard pays off in the long run. You don't get trophies without working hard. Your work in practice can help you practice being a hard worker for the work field.
sport or not
In the end it's in the eye of the beholder whether you think show choir and band are sports. I hope you could see my point and help to understand the hard work that goes into being in these programs. Maybe you have gained some more respect for what we do and that alone is all we need. So what do you think is it a sport or not?
