Hanukah Learning with Rabbi Baum
RE-Dedication - Hanukah and the City of Jerusalem
Please join us
Saturday, December 16, 2017, following our 9:30 am Shabbat morning service
If the holiday of Hanukah commemorates a military victory of the Hasmoneans over the Greeks, why do the rabbis seem to ignore this fact and focus on the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple? Is there another reason why we celebrate Hanukah for 8 days not related to the miracle of the oil (hint - yes, there is!)? What did the holiday mean for Jerusalem in the time of the Hasmoneans; hundreds of years later (post-destruction) for the rabbis of the Talmud; and what does the holiday mean for Jerusalem and the Jewish people now? During our text study, we also will bring in current events by discussing the decision by the U.S. to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.
