News from Dr. Cappucci
We are ready!
Get Ready to Return to School
All Summer Challenge journals and work are due the first week of school. We are all so proud of our students who took the summer challenge.
Homework at Glenwood- Students are expected to read nightly and practice their facts.
In an effort to allow children to be children and give them time to explore their interests and spend time with their families, we will continue with our unstructured homework. It is expected that students read (20 -40 minutes a night depending on their grade levels) and practice math facts nightly. However, there won’t be a reading log or anything to check off for math facts - it’s just expected that both will be done. Students will be held accountable for knowing their math facts as well as reading for enjoyment each night. The only time homework will be formally assigned is when students need to study for a test/quiz or complete a project. Here is a list of things you can do with your child at home in the absence of formal homework. I know it is tempting for children to use a device or watch TV in the absence of formalized homework, but the following list will provide a more fun and enriching experience for your child.
READ, READ, READ, READ, READ….We still expect that all students will read for pure enjoyment each day. This builds their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, higher level thinking skills, and so much more.
Talk with your child. Talk about the day, tell stories, talk about what your childhood was like. Talking actually helps children become better writers. They can’t get it down on paper if they can’t talk about it.
Take 10-15 minutes to practice math facts with flash cards.
Play!!! Playing is how children learn to be creative, problem solve, experiment, and use their imagination. Play inside, play outside, play upside down, play wherever your heart desires.
Let your child help you meal plan/cook dinner. Cooking is not only fun, it is a life skill that could even turn into a newfound passion for your child.
Play board games.
Go outside and explore nature. You can even integrate art and draw what you see or do leaf rubbings - be creative!
Go to the library. Rutland is so lucky to have an incredible public library. If you go to the Rutland Library often, it might be fun to explore and visit libraries in other towns.
Build things. Use legos, blocks, or whatever you have lying around the house. Then take your creation apart and build something else.
Learn a new hobby, try a new sport, meet a new friend in the neighborhood. Having new experiences helps us get out of our comfort zone and learn how to problem solve and become more confident in a variety of situations.
Volunteer. Teaching children to give back to their community will teach them lessons that will last far longer than homework would.
Get out and exercise. Go for a walk or a run, play in your yard, play with your dog if you have one.
Tell jokes.
Draw, color, paint, use play-doh, cut/glue things together.
Buy a houseplant and research how to take care of it.
Take a walk around your neighborhood (or anywhere!) and try to notice as many new things as you can. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven down certain roads and five years later noticed a house that had probably been there for years!
Make a collage using pictures/words/letters cut out from magazines.
Use a piece of paper to try origami.
Try a new food.
Help pack your own lunch/snack for the next day.
Put on a play. Make costumes, backgrounds, etc. and entertain your family and friends!
Learn to knit or crochet.
Build something using wood.
Learn how to sew
Start a collection (stamps, stickers, rocks, coins, anything you can think of!).
Look at the stars at night with a telescope.
Dance and sing like no one is watching (or listening!)
Learn how to play a musical instrument.
Learn another language (Speaking multiple languages and playing an instrument actually makes your brain smarter! You create new pathways in your brain and it improves memory, improves your first language, enhances decision making, enhances your ability to multi-task, relieves stress, gives you a sense of accomplishment, and so much more).
Help with chores at home (chores help children become more self-sufficient, increases their confidence, gives them responsibility, and creates accountability).
Learn about photography.
Conduct a science experiment. But please don’t use anything dangerous.
Learn a new and interesting word each day.
Put together puzzles.
Complete a word search or crossword puzzle.
Look for birds outside and try to identify them.
Lay on the ground, look up at the sky, and try to notice if the clouds look like anything (a dinosaur, a house, a person, etc.).
Be creative - I’m sure you can think of 100 more things you can do. And remember to read and practice math facts!

What is Happening at Glenwood
Please, Please for the safety of our students never drive around the cars parked in the pick-up or drop off line. in the last two years children were almost hit by a car trying to speed out of line.
Buses arrive between 8:55 and 9:05.
Our drop off line out back opens at 8:55 and ends at 9:08. Students must be in their seats ready to learn by 9:10.
Our mornings are extremely busy and we cannot have children dropped off at the school prior to 8:55. Clubhouse is available for students every morning beginning at 7:00. Contact Rutland Recreation for information.
Our Makerspace and Science Lab have been closed for 18 months. We are opening them up this year.
Please do not drop off Makerspace materials if we are not in the building. We will have to throw away the materials if we are unsure of where they came from. Thank you for understanding.
A true makerspace is defined not by what's in it, but rather by what comes out of it: projects, experiences, artifacts, and learning. At Glenwood we are looking to have a makerspace that opens opportunities for children to design, create and explore. We are looking for donations of materials we can use in our makerspace. We are in desperate need of materials for our makerspace. Some things that we can not get enough of are:
small pieces of wood and nails for building
Cereal and cardboard boxes
masking and duct tape,
toilet paper and paper towel rolls,
craft supplies,
cereal boxes,
cardboard,
fabric, yarn,
streamers
plastic containers,
or anything that may end up in the recycling bin
We appreciate these and other materials that are in a clean and usable condition.
