GRAPHING: OUR FAVORITE OCEAN ANIMAL!

On Monday, we voted for our favorite ocean animal...

We got the idea of what voting is and we decided which category had the most and which category had the least. We all did very well with this activity! Below is a picture of our Favorite Ocean Animal graph.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE!

Caring for a small pet, such as a fish, can provide young children with the opportunity to learn more about animals firsthand. Young children are engaged and learn best by DOING. We can certainly teach about animals through books and pictures … but how much MORE will they learn when they can actually interact with one. They can learn about caring for animals and the responsibility that goes with it. For preschool programs, having a classroom pet provides a wonderful opportunity for learning about nature, science and living things.

We are thrill to have KIWI in a our classroom. He is a Betta Fish with gorgeous, vibrantly colors.

MAGIC GROW TURTLE

Ms. Ginni brought this Magic Grow sea turtle and we put it in water to make it grow 600% in size, we recorded the changes and talked about them. This firsthand observation allowed us to make a real-life connection with the content of the book that we read this week called One tiny turtle.

SORTING OCEAN ANIMALS

We had fun discovering that Ms. Ginni put some ocean animals inside the play dough this week. We looked for all the animals and then we had to place them in different categories using a work mat with the pictures.

Ms. Ginni put some creatures in a bowl to make a frozen ocean world, and she let us ‘rescue’ them by excavating them as the ice melted. This activity kept us curious and busy for a long time.

HOW BIG IS A BLUE WHALE?

Big image
One of the activities this week was to look up the size of a whale but it is hard for small children to actually SEE how long that is, so we went out to the parking lot and we used tape to measure how long that would be.
We tried to find out how many preschoolers long a blue whale is! (We needed the help of PK 3.2 and PK 3.3)

Acting like Dolphins

To add a gross motor component and just to have some plain fun, part of our learning involved acting like ocean animals. We moved like dolphins, and in the picture below, you can see that we made our best impression of a dolphin.

LEARNING ABOUT MONET...

Our Preschool room is inspired by the founder of French impressionism, Claude Monet and his Ocean paintings.

We discussed the colors, the light and all the other characteristics.
