Principal's Message
ELK Family,
We are into our second six weeks grading period and we are seeing some outstanding work from our BHS students. I know that many of you do this, but if you don't I encourage you to sit down with your child and talk about a few things: grades, growth in school, achievement, success and the future. It is never too early or too late to talk about the future. It also does not matter if they are high school students, middle school students, or elementary students. This daily conversation about a child's current and future success brings about some great talk. Ask simple questions such as.....How was school today? What did you learn today? What are you interested in doing after high school? What are your plans? How can we help you achieve your goals and dreams? We all can take a little extra time out of our already busy day and be an active listener. Even though high school students are seeking independence, as parents and adults in their lives, we can continue to listen to their needs. The simple conversations about school can relay the message to them that success at school is important. Here at BHS, we have great students and great parental support.
Thanks for everything that you do!!!
Go ELKS !!!

Students who sign a pledge will receive a bracelet.
Students will also have the opportunity to dress to match our theme on pledge days.

Wednesday’s Theme - Join the fight against drugs. Dress - Camouflage
Thursday’s Theme - Be Someone’s HERO. Stand up to drugs. Dress - Super Hero T-Shirt
The Red Ribbon Campaign reports that conversations with your teens about drug use are making an impact. “Children of parents who talk with their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t.” To learn more about drug prevention you can visit www. redribbon.org.

"Spirit of the Elks" Marching Band
The BHS production was based on and inspired by music from the spiritual, "Joshua Fit the Battle at Jericho", "The Burning Bush" by Hans Zimmer from the soundtrack of Disney's feature film, "The Prince of Egypt", "Arabesque" by Samuel Hazo, and "Doxology" from the Genevan Psalter. Musical arrangements were by William Pitts of Atlanta, Georgia.
The visual story line was based on the Biblical tale of Joshua and the children of Israel as they approached their first military challenge during the process of possessing the land of Canaan. During the finale, when the trumpets sounded a loud call, all shouted in unison, and the walls of Jericho fell down flat.
The show featured solos by Allie Price, flute, Hayden Simms, trumpet, Andrew Bracken, alto saxophone, and Emory Harris & Chelsea Austin. both of the color guard.
Nineteen 5A and 6A marching bands performed their 2016 shows during the annual event.

AVID Staff Spotlight
Kaitlin Houk teaches PAP and on level English 1. She is also one of the Honors Cohort teachers. She attended college at Abilene Christian University. She majored in Education and English receiving a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Houk was active in her sorority at Abilene Christian. Her favorite college memory was studying abroad in Oxford, England. When asked, “What skills did you learn in college to help you in your personal and professional life?” she said, "Time management (especially during pledging) and doing things that I didn't want to do because I knew the end result would be worth it.” When asked, “What advice would you offer students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Mrs. Houk replied, “Go for it! You have so much more of the world to explore!”
