Fall is Officially Here!
Signs of fall are all around! We are taking note of the changing trees and cooler temperatures. Now is a great time to start practicing zipping/unzipping coats. We like to encourage children to be as independent as possible. We will also spend a lot of time talking about the importance of keeping our hands clean and off of our face, eyes, and mouth. This is how those pesky germs get in! Unfortunately, we have already had several Lions out sick with fever this week. Keep encouraging those healthy habits so our kiddos stay at school! Should your child be sick or absent for any reason, please contact Hilton's attendance line at 810.299.3954.
Our Learning Week Together
- This week we continued our introductions of Reading and Writing Workshop. Your child received a brand new big-kid JOURNAL to write in each day! We are working to get the stories in our heads onto the paper. So much fun! You will get to peek into their work at our conference later in October.
- We learned Habit 1 of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids... I am in charge of me! I invite students to be proactive and take responsibility of themselves and their belongings.
- We launched one of the Making Thinking Visible thinking routines this week... See, Think, Wonder! We analyzed a coconut and thought deeply about what we saw, thought, and wondered. Ask your child what we did with the coconut afterward! Using thinking routines is a new-ish BAS curriculum initiative. I attended a fabulous professional development over the summer and look forward to bringing these deep-thinking routines to the Lion Room!
- We played counting games and went on a Number Walk to find numbers around Hilton.
- This week the students had a guest teacher (substitute teacher) a few mornings this week. I do not like to be out; but meetings and such do happen occasionally. The kids got gleaming reports!
A Note about homework
You may have noticed or read that we do not have official homework in the Lion Room. However, I will keep you informed of what skills should be targeted in your conversations with your child at home. As we work on letter identification and letter sounds, it would benefit your child to talk about letters and sounds at home. Also, don't forget to enjoy books together!
Looking ahead...
Next week we will enjoy apple-centered activities. Please send an apple or two with your child next week (Monday is best)... All sizes and shapes and colors are welcome!
Popcorn Friday next Friday... Send $0.25 if you wish!
