Meet the Candidate Barbara Jordan
In Barbara Jordan’s time period, women were not very valued and neither were African American people. She believed that things could be changed though, and ended up becoming the first African American woman to do quite a lot of important things. She was the first congresswoman to come from the South, where slavery was everywhere, she was the first female representative from Texas and she was the first African American woman elected to the Texas senate. Barbara Jordan broke many racial and gender barriers by persevering and remaining calm and in control of difficult circumstances.
