Fourth Years
¡Viva la Herencia Hispana! Spanish 4 & 5 learners (with Srta. Brown who didn’t want to miss out on the fun) attended a cultural event hosted by the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas. Laughs, “buenos,” prizes, and new “vocabulario” were abundant as we played Lotería - a game of chance similar to Bingo and played often in Mexico.
Some learners even stepped up their participation at the event by volunteering to be “the caller.”
We look forward to continuing to participate in some of the other cultural events honoring Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15-Oct 15) throughout the DFW area.
Third Years
Attention 3rd Year Parents,
The Newspapers have arrived! Every Learner has received a copy of their paper to bring home so please ask them to see it. If additional papers are desired or if you would like a copy of one of the other 3 papers your learner did not bring home, then please don't hesitate to ask as we have extra copies available.
History debates begin on Monday and run through Tuesday as the learners are arguing about the most influential characteristics to America emerging as a world power. Thank you to the 4th year learners who will serve as the judges panel. It will be a fun and engaging activity for sure. In their other mods the learners have finalized their individual products so that they are ready for K'Ching Project Launch. We are seeing some really innovative ideas; ask your learner about what product they have decided upon.
A reminder that this upcoming Wednesday, Oct 2nd, is our Project Launch Day for K'Ching in which the learners will be guided through a simulation beginning with how small business evolve into larger companies. But beware of expansion and contraction during the business cycle!!!!
We 3rd Year facilitators prioritize the learning behind our activities and let that guide our grouping experiences. The grouping process will begin in the morning of Oct 2nd and be finalized by end of the day.
Thank you,
Your 3rd Year Facilitators
Second Years
Dear Second Year Parent,
Your 10th grade learner has begun learning experiences for the second project of the year called Beneath the Surface. During the course of this project, learners will work in teams to answer the driving question “How do relationships impact progress?” Learners will design a submarine prototype that will be used to locate an unidentified but important object that is located beneath the surface of the sea. Team members will also participate in a Model United Nations, which will allow the learners to take on the role of UN delegates to work together to solve a problem through the use of parliamentary procedure. Project presentations will include a submarine competition followed by a Model United Nations.
Here is what you can expect during this project for each of the courses:
Algebra- Learners will understand how to use functions and matrices and their inverses to transform information into new outputs and then transform them back
Geometry- Learners will be able to understand how mathematical processes, such as distance, vectors and trigonometry, are used in navigation.
English- Learners will read and analyze the Dystopian text 1984. Learners will identify the structure and determining the meaning of poetry.
Art-Learners will investigate the power of visual messages as they explore the impact of photography in communicating culture and ideas. Learners will design pinhole cameras, experiment with darkroom developing, and create a digital photojournalism story.
Tech-Cyber-Learners will continue to develop their web design skills, explore the needs and effects of cyber-security. Learners will create a propaganda video to further their visual messaging techniques.
Engineering- Learners will be working through the engineering design process through a submersible build.
Biology- Learners will be able to understand how the “micro” world impacts “macro” systems. Learners will understand that biological systems and processes, such as cellular functioning, production of proteins, as well as the human immune response, lead to homeostatic conditions.
WH/Debate- Learners will be learn Parliamentary Procedure and participate in a Model United Nations, representing delegates from various countries. Learners will survey power and technology during Early Civilizations and the Classical world. In debate learners will have a role on a committee as part of the United Nations. They will present information and develop arguments to represent their assigned countries needs.
LOTE-Learners will continue building interpretive (reading and listening), presentational (writing and speaking), and interpersonal communication skills through the lens of French/Hispanic cultural units.
Beneath the Surface Important Project Dates:
United Nations First General Assembly - October 18th
Submarine Competition Rowlinson Natatorium - November 13th
United Nations Second General Assembly - November 15th
Questions for the dinner table:
What types of connections exist in the world?
How do I create a model in CAD?
Why can’t I take antibiotics to treat the flu?
How does my body respond to fight different pathogens?
How are structure and function related in living things?
What types of relationships exist between functions?
What is digital privacy? How can I protect digital privacy?
How does policy develop through discourse and debate?
What factors influence policy?
How has power evolved?
How is power managed?
How has technology affected power balances throughout history?
How can I communicate a visual message?
How can I have an impact on others through a visual medium?
Sincerely,
The 2nd Year Facilitator Team

Did You Know...
…...That one of the most concerning issues with vapes, e-cigarettes, etc., is that it is virtually impossible to visually recognize what is or isn’t inside of the vaping device. Most e-juices look similar (brown, tan, reddish oily consistency) and smell very sweet. The reality is most of these devices are obtained on the black market or online, virtually eliminating the ability to definitively identify the contents of any single vaping device and/or pod.
As adults, our first steps include sharing knowledge of this growing issue, keeping a close eye out at home and at school for these devices and sweet smells, staying up to date on available research and resources, and talking with our child(ren). Please take a look at the most recently developed vaping device:
