Bi-Weekly News from Winfield Elementary: 3.3.23
From the Principals, Mrs. Alonzo & Mrs. Hall
Dear Winfield Families,
Next week, our school will be embarking on an all school book club called One School, One Book. During an assembly, every child will receive a copy of the same book (shhhh, it's a surprise!). We are personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special activity over the next few weeks.
With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, and the entire staff - will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits. Think of this as one BIG book club! You will be asked to read a section most nights– about 10-15 minutes per night. Each day we will also add recordings of each section on students’ ELA Buzz Agendas and social media. This is a fun way to listen to the section read by a special guest reader.
Each morning, your child will be invited to answer a daily trivia question to encourage and reward attentive, active listening. Prizes and fun activities will be sprinkled throughout the 3 weeks of reading. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Each day there is also a selected vocabulary word to note in the reading. Feel welcome to talk about the trivia questions and vocabulary from the story at home. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can feel included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about the story!
One School, One Book is a novel program in which children at all grade levels will all be reading and listening to the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate older children.
We hope this wonderful story will prompt discussions about hope and friendship. Please also consider sending in a photo of your family reading together to add to our One School, One Book bulletin board. “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about.” With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.

It's time for the Winfield-Jerry Ross PTO Read-a-thon!
Read-a-thon promises to be a fun, exciting journey that starts Monday March 6, 2023. We will get your children excited about reading.
We know you have limited time but want the best education for your child. That’s why we hope everyone will activate their reader's account as soon as possible. This is where you can record and view your reader's progress.
We encourage you to activate your reader’s account today by clicking on https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/NsZyHV/1 and following the simple instructions.
Thanks so much,
Winfield-Jerry Ross PTO
Whistles from the Gym, Mr. Hedl
Thank you to all students and families who raised money for this year's "Kid's Heart Challenge." As a school, we raised $14,378.69 for the American Heart Association (which ranks us in the top 10 for schools in Indiana who choose to do the event). Please allow 3-4 weeks for thank you prizes to arrive. Students who raised money will receive the thank you gifts during PE class, once they arrive. Awesome job Wildcats!!
Any questions please contact Mr. Hedl at 663-2287 or jhedl@cps.k12.in.us

IMPORTANT NOTE From the Clinic, Nurse Becky
Please send in extra clothing (pants, underwear, shirt) for your child to keep in their locker/cubby. I do not have all sizes of clothing at school to provide for your child if an accident happens that soils their clothing. We have had many children falling in the mud at recess lately! If they don’t have a change of clothes here, and I don’t have their size available to change into, I will have to call home to have something brought in, or they will have to remain in their soiled clothing the rest of the day. I am running low on all leggings/joggers, so please wash and send them back if your child has needed to borrow any. I will definitely take any donated joggers for boys, or leggings for girls from sizes 5-10. Thanks so much!
