Reminders About Netiquette
Remember, if you wouldn't say it to the person's face, then don't write it and send it. When you write something, the other person can't see your body language or hear your tone of voice. Avoid sarcasm and using ALL CAPS, since it may look as if you are YELLING.
2. There are no "do overs"
Once it is out there, it is impossible to take it back. I always tell my students to ask themselves, what would my mom, dad, principal, counselor.....think if they read this?
3. What you post is permanent
Once you click send, it is out of your control. You don't know who can forward it, who will see it. You should never share personal information online, even with those you trust the most, like your best friend or boy/girlfriend.
4.The internet is not a weapon
Please refrain from gossiping. It is not nice to talk about someone when they are not there to defend themselves. Don't use social media to exclude peers, specially after a fight.
5. Who is this message for
What happens in cyberspace, will stay there forever. Your intention was to send a private message/picture to a person, but remember that it can be cut, pasted, and forwarded to an infinite number of people. Social media should never be used to share secrets.
6. Take it slow
Please take your time to think what you are posting, specially if you are feeling strong emotions at that time.
7. Set strong passwords
Strong passwords protect your identity and your information. ONLY share your passwords with your parents.
8. Unplug every once in a while
Remember if you don't agree with something log off, end the conversation. Don't stay in a group if you don't agree with what is being said.
9. Don't talk to strangers
There is a big difference between real friends and online followers. It is not about how many online "friends" you have. It is not a popularity contest. You would never approach a stranger and share private information. Why would you do it online?
10. It's (NOT) nice to share
You don't share your passwords with the exception of your parents. Your parents will keep you safe from physical, emotional, end even legal harm.
