Dear Families,
With the change of seasons, it’s time to plan ahead for winter weather and how it may affect our schools.
This message will help you:
- update your contact information,
- find information on weather communications, and
- find your snow bus route if your child rides the bus.
Depending on conditions (which could include snow, flooding, power outages, etc.), school could:
- close for the day,
- open two hours late with regular bus routes or snow bus routes,
- open on time with snow bus routes.
Please familiarize yourself with our weather procedures here.
How can I get weather/emergency information?

First All-District Family Night
You are invited to our first all-district family night from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 at Bellingham High School.
We are excited to celebrate, nurture and be inspired by the creativity and individuality within all our kids.
Come join us for a dynamic guest speaker, performances and presentations from musicians and artists and clubs and activities—from the littlest elementary school choir members to to our amazing high school Robotics team and musical groups (among much more!).
We are so proud of our kids and what they accomplish every day toward all of our Bellingham Promise outcomes. We hope their creativity and passions will inspire you, too, and help you and your child see the exciting things in store for them as a student in Bellingham Public Schools as they explore, learn, perform and find their passions.
Put Dec. 9 on your calendar; we hope to see you all there!
Medication at School
When a student requires medication at school, either prescription or over the counter (OTC), parents/guardians must return a completed medication authorization form with directions from a licensed health care provider (LHCP) to Sehome. One exception is that certain OTC medications that are self-administered do not require LHCP instructions, but they do require a parent/guardian to complete the medication authorization form. There is no situation that a student taking medications at school does not need a medication authorization on file.
The privilege of students self-caring their medications, whether prescription or OTC, requires students to take their medication as instructed on the authorization and being aware that they may not share their medications with anyone. Medications brought to school must be in the original prescription container or manufacturers labelled OTC container. Medication authorizations expire at the end of the current school year, or sooner as per LHCP instructions.
Link to Medication Authorization Form can be found here.
Anticipated Absence Notice
Method acting, anyone?
In September, the drama club of Sehome High School went sailing on the local “high seas” as preparation for their upcoming production of Treasure Island. What better way to get into character than to sail the seas, sing some sea shanties and experience what the crew of the Hispaniola would have felt in the 1700s.
Organized by Sehome’s English and drama teacher Kandace Arens McGowan, the cast and crew of Treasure Island boarded the Lady Washington, a historic tall ship, in mid-September and sailed near Langley, Washington, near Deception Pass. The field trip included lessons in ship culture, history, and sailing, as well as in sea shanties and stories of life at sea. McGowan says that the point of the trip was “to be able to build their characters and create a world for the fall play.”
Treasure Island opens Thursday, Dec. 5 in Sehome High School’s brand new Big Little Theatre and runs at 7 p.m. on Dec 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 14.
Ironically and of note, the Lady Washington, a full-scale replica of the original ship, herself has played many parts in Hollywood movies, including in Pirates of the Carribean (2003) and Star Trek: Generation (her movie debut in 1993).
