Single Replacement Reaction

Ferric oxide and carbon react to produce solid iron and carbon dioxide. Carbon replaces the iron because it is more reactive and higher on the activity series. This reaction occurs in the steel industry where a type of coal (coke) is used to replace iron out of ferric oxide.
Double Replacement Reaction

AgNO3(aq) + KCl(aq) = AgCl(s) + KNO3(aq)
Silver nitrate mixed with potassium chloride reacts to produce silver chloride and potassium nitrate. Silver chloride is used as a antidote for mercury poisoning and potassium nitrate is used to remove tree stumps.
