7/8 Reading Skills

What is Reading Skills?
Understanding what you read is essential to being a successful student and adult. 7/8 Reading Skills is an intervention that uses two programs to help fill the gaps in your student's reading ability. Read 180 focuses on vocabulary and comprehension while System 44 focuses on phonics. Both programs are taught within each class. Because the 6-8 Skills curriculum is the same for each grade, I teach both 7th and 8th grade within one class. This has been a positive and successful mix.
Each day your student rotates through 3 activities: small group with Mrs. Packard targeting specific skills, software using student choice but taught at that student's Lexile, and independent reading where students complete books 50 below or 100 above their Lexile (R180) or a specific phonics strand (S44). An "A" in Skills class does not mean your student is ready to exit the program. It means that your student works hard in class and completes all work necessary to move their Lexile toward a high school ready Lexile.

Emailing is the easiest way to contact me. I arrive at 6:30am and leave about 4:30pm. I do not read emails once I'm home, but I will contact you asap. I help in the library most Wednesdays until 5:00. If your student needs extra help, that is a great day to stay after school.
This is my 25th year in education!! I have been a teacher, an administrator, and I worked in the College of Education at Texas Tech University before moving to Omaha. I have 3 dachshunds and A LOT of books! I'm very excited about helping your student become a better reader.
