OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - May 20-24, 2019
WCS Teacher and Principal of the Year
The 2019-2020 WCS Teacher and Principal of the Year were revealed May 21 at a special event. We are thrilled to announced that Marquis Spell, principal of Springfield MS, is the new Principal of the Year and Britney Phillips, fourth-grade teacher at Lucama ES, is the Teacher of the Year! Both will advance to the regional level of the competition. We also want to thank WAAT Principal Krystal Cox and Elm City MS Math Teacher Leigh Anne Orr for being such great representatives this year!
Mr. Spell is finishing his third year as the principal at Springfield and his 12th as an administrator. He works hard to build a climate where students, staff and parents know that relationships are at the heart of everything. He remains visible, accessible and has close bonds with his students and staff - just check out social media to see him constantly posting a selfie with students and staff. Ms. Phillips has been teaching for nine years and this was her third year as a fourth-grade teacher. Her principal, Mr. Marks, had this to say about her – “Her peers look up to her as a voice of reason and knowledge with any questions related to instruction. She plans hard, works hard and exhibits extreme concern about the education for all of her students. She is charismatic, creative and thinks outside of the box.”
WCS wants to thank Vester Auto Group for providing Ms. Phillips the one-year lease of a 2019 Chevy Equinox, Wells Fargo for financial support and The Wilson Education Partnership for co-sponsoring the event with WCS. The WCS Public Relations Department wants to thank Dr. Lane Mills and Robin Williams for being amazing emcees, the Jones ES administration and staff for hosting, the Beddingfield HS Culinary Program for preparing the meal, the Fike HS Family and Consumer Science Program for preparing the desserts, several Fike HS students for helping to decorate and the WCS Maintenance Department for assistance!

Owens Scholars
Shout Out! to the four Hunt HS seniors who earned Owens Scholarships this year, which provides funding so they can pursue a degree in education. When they graduate from college, they come back to teach for WCS!!! The scholarship program began in 1998 when Pee Wee and Myrtle Owens created a private trust prior to their deaths. Since that time, WCS has awarded 129 Owens Scholarships, which includes this year’s recipients - Hope Nguyen, Logan Hinnant, Christian Phaby and Haley Johnson. We congratulate them on this huge achievement!
Uniting the World
ACT Achievement
Shout Out! to Anagha, a seventh-grader at Elm City MS, for her success on the ACT test, which is usually taken by high school students. Only 32 percent of students in the nation posted high enough scores to be invited to the Duke TIP State Award Ceremony at ECU, and she was one of them. She qualified for several onsite advanced courses for math and science and also qualified for the E-Studies program. These courses are offered at Appalachian State, Davidson and Wake Forest University.
Year in Review
Shout Out! to the Rock Ridge ES Academically and Intellectually Gifted fourth- and fifth-grade students for their hard work this year. Parents were invited to an open house to see projects such as informative and persuasive videos about the dangers of palm oil and also a 3-D replica of ancient Rome. The replica showcased many elements of Roman architecture including the Colosseum, an aqueduct, public baths, a triumphal arch and villas. AIG Specialist Rebecca Wise is very proud of the learning her students have achieved this year!

MORE SHOUT OUTS!
- "Shout Out! to our behind the scenes heroes at Fike HS - Custodians Ms. Barnes, Mr. Barnes, Ms. Lucas and Mr. Crutchfield. They have been working tirelessly to make sure our school building is in working order as well as making sure our faculty and students walk into a fresh building every morning. They are also working hard to prepare for graduation on June 8. I am so proud of them and could never thank them enough for all of their hard work this school year!" - From Fike HS Secretary Taylor Lumley
- "Shout Out! to the Jones ES School Nutrition staff. They are so patient and kind and are always willing to help my exceptional students when we come in for lunch. We appreciate them a great deal!" - From K-2 AU Teacher Ranisha Moore
- "Shout Out! to Fike HS Science Teacher Extraordinaire Angelique Showman for leading her Forensic Science students in an amazing and disgusting decomposition experiment. I've never known a science teacher to bring a dead pig carcass to school to track the decay progression with their students. She provided them with an excellent, unforgettable opportunity to experience science first hand. Bravo!" - From Fike HS Media Coordinator Joy Edwards
Operation Backpack - Save the Date!
For the past seven years, WCS has been able to provide backpacks to students in need because of the incredible generosity of the Wilson community and beyond. Mark your calendars for these events! Chick-fil-A of Wilson Owner Christy Proctor celebrates her birthday each year by supporting our backpack drive (WCS Operation Backpack) with her own fundraiser - Bucks For Backpacks! Make sure to visit Chick-fil-A on June 14 between 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. if you would like to donate! And if your child is in need of a backpack, attend WCS Operation Backpack on Aug. 17 from 9-11 a.m. at Fike HS. Backpacks will be available to WCS students in need on a first come, first serve basis.
