Graphic Novel Creator Gareth Hinds to Visit SHS on April 25!
The SHS Art & English Departments will welcome Gareth Hinds, an award-winning author and illustrator of graphic novels, to Seekonk High on Wednesday, April 25. Students will have the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime presentation with this critically-acclaimed illustrator to learn more about the creative process and bridge the gap between art and English. Hinds will talk about how he started as a video game designer and animator and become an author of award-winning graphic novels. To attend this one-hour presentation in the SHS Library, students need to ask their English or art teacher for a free ticket.
Hinds’ work includes Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four-starred reviews and a spot on ten "best of 2010" lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called "spellbinding"), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called "stellar" and "a remarkably faithful rendering").
This special event is supported in part by a grant from the Seekonk Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Additional support has been provided by DonorsChoose campaign contributions and a grant from the Seekonk Parents Association.

coming soon - Online Progress Reports & Report Cards
Seekonk is pleased to announce that starting in the fall of 2018, all student progress reports and report cards will be e-mailed to parents/guardians and available exclusively online through Rediker Plus Portal, the grading management system.
This move is to streamline school/home communication and provide quick access for families to monitor student progress. This move also saves money on expensive mailings at a time when many students say their families prefer online access for ease of use and convenience.
For families that prefer paper reports, they will have the option of visiting the Guidance Office to request a printout.

Be the Moment
I have a challenge for everyone over the course of vacation. Take some time, put in a little effort, and create a moment of appreciation and gratitude for someone.
Think of the following quote: "You can't understand someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes."
We often get so caught up in our own lives and goals that we forget about those who are there to support us. We sometimes take them for granted and pass up the opportunity to let them know just how much they mean to us.
I was recently surprised by someone who did just this thing for me. They took the time to go out of their comfort zone to make me feel noticed and appreciated. That created a moment of gratitude for me that lasted a long time. Upon telling a friend, he challenged me to do the same for the person. I need to share my idea, the actual act, and the outcome of it with him.
So that's my challenge to you. Select someone close to you who may fall a little "under your radar" because of their constant presence. Think of some act you can do for them to show gratitude and appreciation. Find someone to hold you accountable and share it all with them. Finally, do it and bring happiness and appreciation to someone who surely deserves it for the role they play in your life.
Good luck and feel free to share the experience.

Third quarter progress reports were handed out on Wednesday for students to bring home. The printed report card had 2nd quarter comments listed in error. An updated version with third quarter comments was posted in the e- locker in the portal on Thursday. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Please review the information with your student. Thank you.

Thank you to our guest speakers for volunteering their time to this event: A David Larson, Todd Duvall, Dr. Jerome Robinson, Dr. Michael Worden, Andrew Wu, Lori Correia, Lauren Porto, Dr Jonathan Schiller and Donna Rizzadini Cabral. Thank you to all the faculty for helping with the STEM Fair Event. Three students received gift cards to Staples provided by the Science Club: Emma Hill, Celine Glaude & Vanessa Jacome!
Mrs. Cunard's AP Biology students recently mapped and modeled aspects of the body systems and homeostasis in an after school study session. What they created on the board is truly a thing of beauty!
Mrs. Cunard's Biology I class extracted DNA from peas this week as part of their study of Molecular Biology. They got some excellent results!
Savanna Amaral accepted to all-state program
The Art Department is proud to announce that junior Savanna Amaral has been accepted to Massachusetts Art All State. It is a great honor to be chosen to participate in this program. Savanna will be attending on June 8 and 9, 2018. Art All-State is a two-day event at the UMASS Dartmouth. Students nominated and accepted into the program spend two days working in studios directed by professional artists.
Art All-State brings together some of the most talented juniors from across the state. The students, competitively selected, collaborate with artist/mentors to create group installations. Through gallery and studio experiences Art All-State challenges and inspires these participants to think creatively about themselves and the role that art can play in life after high school. Savanna is going to have a great experience. Congratulations Savanna Amaral!

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
New opportunities! We are looking for a radiologist and a computer animation professional.
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a radiologist and a computer animation professional. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459

It was a sad week for the Seekonk Athletic Department as the entire Seekonk community came together to honor and mourn the passing of one the giants of Seekonk High School Interscholastic competition, Hall of Famer Joe Texeira, who passed away late last week. Hundreds of current and former Warrior student-athletes attended the wake and funeral of this man who touched so many lives and meant so much. Gone but not forgotten!
The Seekonk High Softball team is off to a fast 2-1 start this season thanks to the pitching of Zoe Jennings, the offense of Kaylee Fonseca, Lauren Paulo, Kennedy Hall, and Alyssa Poland as well as some fine defense from Katie Provazza and Gianna d’ Ambra. The Lady Warriors will entertain Mount Hope High School Friday in a non-league tilt this Friday at Cole Street.
Both the Seekonk Boys and Girls Tennis are looking for that first elusive victory of the season despite fine play from both teams. The girls have received outstanding efforts from Charlotte Drainville, Claudette Elkhoury, Isabella Pezzuli, Hanna Saisselin, Jackie Sicard, Hannah Hendricks and Eleni Mihalides. The Lady Warriors entertain Bourne Friday. The Boys have received fine play from Ethan Santos, Trevor Lopez, Jacob Costa, Jason Ho and Aidan Morrison.
The Seekonk Baseball team is off to a sluggish 1-2 start this season. The team has struggled offensively, but the team’s pitching has been outstanding led by Seniors Joe Ferreira and Terry Smith along with Junior Adam Horowitz. The Warriors look to even their record when they travel to Norton High School Friday afternoon.
The Boys and Girls Outdoor Track teams remain undefeated after their one meet with Fairhaven and will compete in the SCC Relays this Saturday.
The defending Division One State Champion Seekonk High Unified track team opened their 2018 season Thursday with a victory over Bishop Connelly 398-76. Marc Reakes finished first in the 100 meter dash, and Chris Lane finished first in the long jump.
