DNA? What's that? June 7, 1944

What's DNA?

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, and today it was discovered by Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod and Maclyn McCarty. They discovered it when Avery killed a piece of pneumococcus and then eventually extracted out a strand of what contained carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus. This experiment allowed them to confirm what they believed was a nucleic acid (dna) instead of a protein. DNA is important because it is the blueprint to life, it's what makes one unique.
