Reading

We read Cesar Chavez and learned how he fought injustice. We compared and contrasted fiction and non-fiction stories that were centered around injustice. We began a new unit and started reading a story called Real-Life Superheroes. This book has several chapters, each about a different person that did something heroic. In this unit we will focus on determining the main idea and finding key details, analyzing cause and effect, and determining how a text's structure impacts the text.

Writing

We have been working on persuasive writing. We just finished a project in which we studied a famous leader in history and gave a speech on why they should win the Nobel Peace Prize. The goal of our speech was to persuade our audience to vote for our leader. In our next unit, we will be focusing on informational writing. We will be researching and writing an essay on an inspirational person and then creating and presenting a multimedia presentation.

Math

Some of us are learning about multiplying decimals with whole numbers, while the rest of us are adding and subtracting decimals. Most of the classes will be taking the Chapter 5 Test within the next week, which covers adding and subtracting decimals. We will then begin to learn strategies for multiplying and dividing decimals.

Science

We are learning about landforms. We have been doing science experiments with a sand and clay mixture. With the sand and clay, we built a plateau and then used water to create a river. We observed what happened and were able to determine how various landforms are created. We are also learning about mountains and what topographic maps show us. We will have our test over landforms next Wednesday.
