April 2021
Principal's Points
Get ready for hyper speed! June will be here before we know it, so I wanted to share some events that will be happening for the remainder of the year. Mid-term progress reports will be sent home from school with students on April 29th. If you don’t receive a progress report from your child, contact your child’s teacher or the office and we can mail a copy home. M-STEP information has been sent home and the schedule is listed in this newsletter. The Foster PTC is holding its fundraiser on Friday, April 23rd during student's afternoon recess, Jump Rope Mania.
The school year wraps up with our award ceremonies. This year will look different than years past. Classrooms will hold their own award ceremonies which will be live-streamed for parents to view. A schedule for live-streamed events is yet to be determined. Stay up to date on all these events and more by visiting Foster's webpage at www.lasd.net, or following "Principal Dotson" on Facebook.
As student safety is always our top concern, please remember that the playground is unsupervised after school. The temperatures are warmer and I'm noticing more and more students playing after school. The playground is closed to after-school play unless a parent or guardian is there with the child. Also, just as a reminder, the parent drop-off and pick-up areas are either on Lavinia Street or the parking lot by the baseball/soccer field. Car traffic needs to stay away from Emily Street where the buses unload and load. Thank you for cooperating with these safety precautions.

National Bike to School Day is May 5
Did you know that May is National Bike Month? This year, our friends at OJ DeJonge Middle school are inviting Foster Elementary students to join them for a Bike to School event on Wednesday May 5th! Participants will receive a thank you gift for helping raise awareness for the need to create safer routes for bicycling and the importance of increasing physical activity among children. Here are the details for the this fun, optional activity:
🚲 Meet at Oriole Field with your bike between 7:00- 7:15 am on May 5th.
🚲 Police escort to school begins at 7:20am. The route to school will head East on Tinkham Avenue, South on Washington Avenue.
🚲 Students will be expected to follow mask wearing and social distancing protocol.
🚲 Properly worn helmets are highly encouraged!
🚲 Please note this is a voluntary event. Buses will not transport bikes. You will need to make plans to meet at Oriole Field before school, as well as for your bike after school.

Counselor's Corner
Working, learning, and parenting in isolation is difficult and can lead to fatigue, irritability, anxiety - even depression. Our students are communicating with us that they are happier when they are able to freely connect with their friends. I think the same is true for all of us. So whether it is a phone call, text message, video chat or face-to-face meeting reach out to a trusted person when you need help and encourage your children to do the same. If someone trusts you enough to reach out, listen without judgement. You don't need to have all of the answers. Maybe there is no easy solution. Just be there and that will be enough.
If you're not sure who to talk to, feel free to reach out to me anytime. We'll get through this if we rely on one another. None of us are alone.
