The Teal Pumpkin Project
For kids, Halloween is about two things -- costumes and candy. However, kids with food allergies have far fewer options as far as sweet treats go, and Halloween can be a tricky time for them and their parents.
Once again, the non-profit group Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is hoping to help parents and kids better navigate friendly doorsteps by asking people offering food allergy-friendly alternatives to let families know by placing a teal pumpkin out alongside their other jack-o'-lanterns.
This year, FARE is striving to get even closer to their goal of having a teal pumpkin on "every block in every neighborhood in the United States."
1 in 13 children in the United States has a food allergy, according to FARE. While most of the food allergy reactions in the U.S. come from just eight foods, people can have reactions to just about anything. The benefit of providing non-food treats is that it is inclusive for everyone. Low cost items like stickers, bubbles, glow sticks and pencils as safe alternatives to candy. It is important to keep in mind that some non-food items contain common allergens like wheat and latex. Additionally, the food allergy-friendly alternatives should be kept in a separate bowl to avoid cross-contamination.
Help to ensure that every trick-or-treater that comes to your door is able to enjoy the holiday!!

Academic and Career Planning
This month in 6th and 7th grade we are beginning to talk in our guidance classes about Academic and Career Planning (ACP). A statewide initiative has been going on for the last few years to support ACP. According to the Department of Public Instruction, "ACP requires everyone to support students in the process, including academic teachers, administrators, community members, and parents. ACP honors all post-secondary routes to achieve goals, including military, apprenticeship, certification, technical college, and university recognizing that people often move in and out of different routes throughout their lives as needed."
Students in grades 6-8 have standards they have to complete for their portfolio. All of their work is being housed on Career Cruising, an online software system that is used through high school. Ask your students about their matchmaker results and what types of jobs showed up for their interests. Ask them what types of classes they should be taking to set them up for success for their future.
8th graders have a semester-long course on Academic and Career Planning. Each of them will either have this first or second semester. This class is in their elective/specials block, and they will receive a grade for the work they complete.
Career Cruising can be accessed from anywhere with the proper username and login. If you would like to see what your student is working on, I will have parent logins available during conferences.
