Smart Goals

Academic Smart Goal

S - I want to achieve a minimum of a ninety percent average in grades eleven and twelve.

M - I can keep track of my progress by looking at my grades on my past tests and projects in my classes. If I am getting level fours, that means that I am on track and that I should continue what I am doing. If I am getting below level four, I will look at the feedback given and look at my mistakes so I don't make them again. Another way I can keep track of my progress is that I can look at my midterm report card when I receive them in grades eleven and twelve. If I'm getting a ninety average in midterms, that means that I am on track and I should continue what I'm doing. If I'm getting below a ninety, I should work harder than I did before. I can also ask for mark updates from my teacher and ask her if I'm getting a ninety or not. I will basically be looking at past tests and projects and seeing if I can consistently get level fours. If I am, that should mean that I'm getting a ninety. If I'm not getting level fours, I should start looking at the mistakes that I made and look at the feedback given so I don't make the same mistakes twice.

A - The courses that I will be taking in grades eleven are Functions, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, French, Gym, Computer Technology, and Functions. In grade twelve I will be taking English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer technology, French, Functions, Calculus. Some of my strengths that I already know is that I am good at completing all my assignments and homework in any class. I am also very good at paying attention and listening when the teacher is teaching a lesson, so that is not a problem. I am also good at understanding course material as well. But one thing that I will need to do in functions and in calculus is that I will need to be be able to ask questions. One thing that I have noticed is that I don't ask questions when I'm confused in math class. I think that is what is holding me back. So in order to further my understanding in math class, I will ask more questions so I can further my understanding which will allow me to achieve a high mark in math so my average can be at least a ninety percent. I think that I am a pretty strong student in all the sciences. I received a ninety percent last year in grade 9. So I think that if I continue what I'm doing I will be able to achieve this again in the Biology,Physics, and Chemistry. One of my strengths in the sciences is that I can understand the material very well. I am good at memorizing things and I am good at understanding why things work the way they are. But I still think that one of my weaknesses in science is that I do poor in the projects. I think that one thing I will do to make sure that I do good is to look at the rubric before I hand my projects in. This way I can determine what is needed in the project what I need to add to my projects in order to achieve a level four. I think that in French I do very good as well. I got a ninety in French in grade 10. So I should be able to achieve the same mark in grades eleven and twelve. One of my strengths in French is that I have a big vocabulary. I know a lot of words so I can understand texts very well. I am also good at conjugating verbs and understanding the grammar in french. So I should continue my understanding. I think that one thing I should do in order to improve my mark is that I should be more creative in the projects that I receive. I think that I lack in creativity when I do projects. So, if I can make the aesthetics better in my projects, that should lead into a better mark. In English, I got an eighty in grade ten. I have a lot of weaknesses in English. One of my weaknesses is that I have really poor grammar. How I can improve this weakness is that I can start proofreading my work before handing it in. I can also get peers to read it over and ask for feedback so I can improve on my project. One of my strengths is that I am good at understanding novels and themes. So I think that I should continue this skill.

R - I think that this goal is realistic. I think this because I have honours with an eighty five percent average. I think that increasing it to a ninety percent shoudn't be too difficult. But I will have to stay focus and determined throughout the whole school year. I also think that this goal is necessary because in order to go to competitive universities you need a high average. So I need to get a ninety average in order to keep up with the competition.

T- I think that some small goals that I can create is to achieve at least a ninety percent on all my unit tests and summatives. If I can do this, then it should lead me to achieve a ninety percent on my final mark. Another thing that I can do is to dedicate about fourty minutes a day to review my notes so I can retain the information I learn better. Doing this will let me be more prepared for the exams and will help me achieve a higher mark.

Community Involvement Smart Goal

S - I want to gain a minimum of 50 hours during July and August by volunteering at the soccer centre.

M - In July and August there are a total of 8 weeks. That means that every week I should get a minimum of 7 hours of volunteer work done in order to get a minimum of 50 hours done in 8 weeks. How I can keep track of this is that I can create a book and write down how many hours I have completed per day. Then at the end of the week, I can see if I did at least 7 hours of volunteering in that week. If I didn't, then I should start doing more hours by applying to another place to volunteer like at a library in order to get more hours week. If I did get 7 hours in that week, then I should continue what I am doing.

A- One action that I will do is that I will do my volunteering at the soccer centre. That means that I already have a place that I know that I will go to to volunteer. Another action that I can do is volunteer at summer camps at the soccer centre. Summer camps usually run for about 6 hours a day. But they only run for about 2 weeks. So if I can volunteer for the summer camps, it will help to achieve my goal of 50 hours. Some of my strengths are that I am a very active volunteer. I can control kids and I am familiar with working with kids so volunteering will be easier for me because I am familiar with it. But one of my weaknesses is that I have trouble getting a ride to the place. One way that I can improve this is that I can start using the bus to get to the soccer centre. This way, I can be on time and never be late.

R - I think that this goal is realistic. I think this because I already am a volunteer at the soccer centre. So I am already an option for the soccer centre to choose. I know the staff personally so they know that I am a good volunteer. This goal is important because I need 50 hours so I can reach 200 hours of volunteer work. 200 hours was a goal that I set previously for myself to reach. I will be able to accomplish that goal if I can get 50 hours during the summer.

T -Some small goals that I can set is to achieve a minimum of 7 hours of volunteer work per week. This way in 8 weeks I will have a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work. So if I am consistently getting 7 hours done in a week, that means that I am on track. If I am not, that means that I should start doing more hours. One way I can do this is by applying to a second place to volunteer at like the Brampton Library.

Challenges and Solutions

The profession that I chose to research about was Mechanical Engineering. A Mechanical Engineer’s job is to use sciences and math to create designs of products. This job has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages of this job is that there is a good salary. But some of the disadvantage of this job is that there is a high workload and a lot of competition.

One challenge that most people face in the engineering industry is that there is a high workload. It is very hard to balance your social life and work life because of this. Engineers face a lot of projects in their career that need to be completed and have to work a lot of hours in order to complete them. The projects could be done individually or done in a group. The hours that you work also changes depending on what phase you are in the project. Normal hours usually range from 40 to 45 hours per week but can easily go up depending on the deadlines. One solution to this problem is to manage my time better. If I am able to complete my projects earlier and get more work done with less time, I will be able to use that extra time to relax and spend it with family and friends or go on holiday. This way I can become a more efficient person and hopefully become a better engineer.

Another problem that engineers face is that there is a lot of competition to perform well. The engineering industry is highly competitive, therefore engineers receive high amounts of stress because they fear that they will lose their job or never get promoted because they feel that they are not good enough for their employer. They also receive lots of stress because of the high work load and deadlines as well. This problem is very serious for entry-level engineers because it can make them feel like they cannot make any mistakes and will make them feel pressured all the time. One way that I could solve this problem is that I could use stress-relieving techniques in order to keep my calm and stay focused during my job. Some techniques could be deep-breathing, stretching, meditation and taking short breaks. This way, I will be able to stay focused during my job and stress will not make me nervous during my work. This will then allow me to perform so that I will not lose my job.

One of the most dangerous challenges that many Mechanical Engineers face is that the workplace is very dangerous. Engineers work with heavy machinery like conveyor belts, power generators, and other power tools. The Bureau of Labour Statistics has said that exposure to sharp blades, conveyor belts, high powered equipment, and metal cutters are the main reasons why Mechanical Engineers get injured. An obvious solution to this problem is to just be careful. But just being careful will not prevent these injuries. A better solution to this problem could be to ask the employers about possible dangers in the environment and to also ask what they can do to keep me safe. This way, I know that it is both I and my employer that are taking initiative to keep me safe.

Mechanical Engineers face a lot of challenges in their career. Some of these challenges are high workloads, lots of stress, and a dangerous workplace. But these problems can be resolved with different solutions. Some of the solutions could be to become more time-efficient, use stress relieving techniques, and to make sure that my employer is also taking initative to keep me safe.
